This story is now more than 25 years old and I have told it more times than I can count, but it hits very differently today. I was anchoring SportsCenter one afternoon and Lou Holtz was on the show. I was quite excited to talk with him, he had been an icon all of my life. He was very friendly, asking me all about myself as we walked toward the studio to record an interview. I told him: “Actually, Coach, it’s quite exciting, my wife and I are expecting our first child in the next few weeks.” He stopped dead in his tracks and put a finger up near my face. And I’ll never forget what he said. “Young man, the most important thing you can do for a child is make sure every day they know how much you love their mother.” And, just like that, he started walking again. Our daughter was born a month later, our son came two years after that. And I have thought about what Lou Holtz said to me that day about a million times since. RIP Coach, thanks for the best advice anyone ever gave me.

This is Pure Gold. I had the pleasure of spending time with Coach Holtz. I wanted to hear him explain his Three Rules for Life! 1) Do what’s right - trust. 2) Do everything to the best of your ability- commitment. 3) Show people you care - love. It’s pretty simple. He goes on to highlight why the transfer portal is ruining college football. The kids are losing out on the life lessons learned- how to persevere, how to be committed to a program and a group of people. You miss out on the bonds you create over 4 years. If you leave, you still have the problem, you are changing the address. These are words to live by.

Most of you have heard pieces of my story.. The truth is I lost my identity chasing wins and losses. I gave Everything I had to a team and a community I loved as a Head Coach.. meanwhile losing myself and my why in the process. A year ago I was at rock bottom, full of shame and in a losing battle with alcohol that suddenly became too important in my life.. I lost control and everything else along with it. I decided to face it head on and checked into treatment on August 19th 2024 in Statesboro, GA to go find myself again. I fully surrendered. During this process, and months of being committed to getting 1% better ONE day at a time, I made a promise to myself and Jesus: if He helped me find myself again and gave me a second chance, I would be the Father I knew how to be and that I’d spend my life sharing what HIS Grace has done for me.. helping others at their lowest, and spreading awareness of mental health and addiction to Coaches and Players across the country. I didn’t choose to run, hide or leave this profession like some suggested, I decided to face the wreckage and get back to what I believe I was put on this earth to do, coach the greatest game on earth and motivate/inspire players to be their best on and off the field. Today, I am ONE year sober. I’m back coaching and living with a new and redefined purpose, and ready to share what really happened. I’m speaking on podcasts that I’ll be posting across the country and to teams throughout the state about my story and how I’ve overcome. My comeback is proof that setbacks don’t have to define us. #WeDoRecover #ComebackSeason #FindaWay #MoveTheChains #FaithOverFear
