60 landen vliegen massaal naar Colombia om te bespreken hoe we van fossiele brandstoffen af moeten komen. Daarbij verbranden ze alleen al ruim 225.000 liter kerosine en blazen ze zo’n 570 ton CO₂ de lucht in. Genoeg om een heel dorp een maand lang warm te stoken. Mooi klimaatconferentie: even een paar ton CO₂ dumpen en een shitload kerosine wegbranden om te zeggen dat we dat eigenlijk niet meer moeten doen, hilarisch.

Vanaf 24 april komen vertegenwoordigers van zo'n 60 landen bijeen in Santa Marta, Colombia. Het doel is om samen een volgende stap te zetten in het afbouwen van fossiele brandstoffen wereldwijd. Dat is goed voor het klimaat en maakt ons sterker en weerbaarder.

De idiotie van deze consumptiemaatschappij.
Ik heb een broodbakmachine, een hele goeie van @panasonic, die het na tien jaar nog steeds prima doet. Ik gebruik het ding intensief, het bakt al mijn brood, hij draait zeker drie keer per week.
En nu is de bakvorm versleten. De coating is ruw, er zitten dingen aan vast, hoe dat gaat met oude bakvormen, en de broden komen er amper nog uit zonder hele stukken achter te laten.
Dus dan denk je: nieuwe bakvorm en klaar. Tja.
Blijken die dingen onderhand net zoveel te kosten als een nieuwe broodbakmachine.
Dus wat doe je dan? Nieuwe dure bakvorm kopen en hopen dat de machine niet alsnog binnenkort kapot gaat? Nieuwe machine kopen en eentje wegdoen die nog prima is?
Mag ik zeggen dat ik dit een gestoorde markt vind? Panasonic: waarom zo meehelpen aan het vergroten van een toch al massieve afvalberg?

But where was that heart when you removed your shoes and stood in silent prayer inside the very house that celebrates the conquest which erased Christianity from the soil where the greatest Church Fathers once shone?
This is Algeria — the land of Hippo Regius, where Saint Augustine illuminated the entire Latin world with the light of Christ. This is North Africa, once the vibrant cradle of Christianity, home to hundreds of bishoprics, monasteries, and martyrs whose blood made the desert fertile. That flourishing Church was not “gradually displaced.” It was annhilated. In the 7th and 8th centuries the Arab-Muslim conquests swept across the Maghreb with fire and sword. Entire Christian populations were massacred, enslaved, or reduced to dhimmi subjugation until nothing remained. Carthage, Hippo, and countless sees that produced giants of the faith were silenced forever. Today, native Algerian Christians number fewer than 10,000 in a nation of 47 million — most of them foreigners or converts forced to live in secrecy.
And you, Successor of Peter, stand barefoot in that same Algeria’s Grand Mosque — one of the largest in the world — and call it a “divine space, space of God.” You speak of “learning to respect one another, live in harmony, and build a world of peace” through this place of prayer.
Islam is not a “brother religion” that can be bridged by a shared Abraham.
Its holy book explicitly denies the divinity of Christ, rejects the Crucifixion, and curses those who confess Him as polytheists. The God of the Qur’an is not the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. There is no theological common ground sufficient for true peace when one faith is doctrinally commanded to view the other as inferior or enemy. History proves it: 1,400 years of jihad, conquest, and subjugation did not produce harmony — they produced a Christian North Africa that no longer exists.
Your words about “mutual respect” and “coexistence” ring hollow.
They betray the blood of the martyrs who refused to bow to the crescent.
They betray the handful of Algerian Christians today who face church closures, prosecutions, and social ostracism while you praise the very ideology that marginalizes them.
They betray Saint Peter himself, who did not enter the synagogue to engage in polite “dialogue” about shared values, but to proclaim wth boldness: “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
This is not prudence. This is a profound pastoral failure and a betrayal of the Gospel commission.
While you seek harmony in the mosque, Christians across the Islamic world — in Nigeria, Pakistan, Egypt, and yes, underground in Algeria — continue to be slaughtered, imprisoned, or silenced in the name of the same faith you elevate with gestures of respect.
The Church does not need more empty calls for “interreligious harmony” that ignore doctrine and history.
She needs a Pope who remembers that the Church was built on the blood of martyrs, not on the illusion that all paths lead equally to God. She needs a shepherd who defends the uniqueness of Christ, even when it costs popularity or diplomatic favor.
Return to the rock of Peter.
Preach Christ crucified — foolishness to the Greeks and a stumbling block to Muslims — without shame or compromise.
The souls of the North African martyrs, the suffering Chrstians of today, and the faithful worldwide cry out for it.
