@rabbriansamuel I understand the inner conflict.. I’ve been there… let me ask you this.. your mother made a choice for herself… hospice honors that decision even when it conflicts with your desire and honestly fears. It’s normal and natural to preserve your life that innate….

I've always had a positive impression of hospice as an organization focused on helping people die with dignity and as little pain as possible. But after walking through my mom’s experience, I’ve found myself wrestling with it. To be clear, I understand the purpose of hospice. I understand that when someone chooses not to pursue aggressive treatment for a terminal illness, the focus shifts from curing to comfort. But at times, it felt to me like passive euthanasia. For example, my mom has cancer and chose not to treat it. I understand and respect that decision. No radiation, no chemo. Got it. But separately, she became severely anemic. My instinct was simple: “Then give her a transfusion.” But the response I kept hearing was essentially: “Why? She is already dying.” And I wanted to shout, "Give my mother a damn transfusion! I don't want her bleeding to death!" But hospice's stance was, "Well, she chose not to treat, she is not uncomfortable, so what are we really gaining with a transfusion?" And I wrestled with the ethics of non-treatment. At one point I told a hospice nurse that I was praying and hopeful in the Lord that my mom might recover. The response I received was very direct that she would not recover and that she was dying. I know hospice is highly respected, and I can absolutely see why. Peaceful and dignified deaths are a blessing. But my personal experience left me conflicted. At times, their hyperfocus on non-treatment and the inevitability of death felt unsettling to me, like they're a death cult. Trust me, I’m not making a grand declaration about hospice. I know they are good organization. I’m just processing the realities of what I experienced.

My grandfather said he’d never move into a retirement home. He said, “Too expensive… and the food tastes like someone boiled sadness.” Instead, he checked into a beachfront hotel. We asked, “Grandpa, isn’t that even more expensive?” He smiled and said, “Not really. At the retirement home, I’d pay $200 a day for cold meatloaf and no visitors. But here? For $150 a day, I get ocean views, room service, fresh towels, a pool… …and suddenly all my grandkids remember I exist every weekend.” Then he leaned back in his chair and delivered the final line like a mob boss: “And if I die in the hotel lobby, the manager will actually look disappointed. But at the nursing home? They just call it Tuesday.”

Sounds fun, but a “greed leader board” isn’t right for cats that are simply in their home environment unsuspecting of being manipulated by strangers giving it food to be called greedy. Random people feeding your cat isn’t right for health reasons. Cats and animals get obese when overfed or trickle fed constantly and normal diets should still be observed. Novel idea, lots to improve.
