The 48th annual Economic and Business History Society (EBHS) conference commences today and our very own Munashe Chideya presents a chapter from his PhD research titled "Where the money resides: the Cape real estate industry as an investment opportunity, 1897-1902."

These individuals exploited their connections to manipulate zoning use, land structure, and access, thus altering the supply dynamics of the real estate market. His study employs unique methods to explore the long history of crony capitalism at the Cape.

Munashe delves into the involvement of civil servants and politicians as directors and shareholders in private joint stock companies at the Cape, which resulted in various opportunities for corruption.
