There will be no NC second primaries in 2026 as every race exceeded the 30% threshold. Statewide NC primary elections were first enacted in 1915, originally requiring a majority vote, and lacking that the runner-up could demand a “second primary” (runoff). The threshold was dropped to 40% in the 1980s and 30% last decade.
