My uncle ran the family restaurant after my dad passed. I was 19. He told me, “You’re a girl. You don’t need to learn the business. Go to college, get married.”
He put his son, my cousin, in charge of accounts. I was allowed to wait tables for tips.
For 5 years I worked doubles. I memorized every supplier. Every regular’s order. Fixed the inventory system on my own time because “the computer stuff is too hard” for them.
One night I overhear my uncle: “Once we sell this place, we’ll finally be rich. She won’t get a rupee. She didn’t do anything.”
The buyer came next week. Big franchise. They loved the location.
The contract meeting was at the restaurant. My uncle and cousin showed up in suits. I was in my stained apron, clearing table 6.
The buyer asks, “Who actually runs daily operations? We need to talk SOPs, vendor contacts, menu costing.”
My uncle blanks. My cousin says, “Uh, my dad does everything.”
The buyer looks at me. “You. What’s your food cost percentage?”
“28.3%,” I said without thinking. “Chicken supplier gives us 12% discount on Thursdays. We prep biryani at 5 AM or we’re behind all day.”
Meeting over. Buyer pulls me aside. “Your uncle doesn’t know the menu. Do YOU want to sell?”
I owned 40%. My dad’s will. Uncle never told me.
I didn’t sell. I bought his 60% with a bank loan using the restaurant as collateral.
He retired “to travel.” He’s now asking me for a job.
I told him we’re not hiring waiters over 60.
