NEW: Miami-Dade deputy who pushed fellow officer out of harm’s way before being struck by drunk driver receives Gold Medal of Valor and Purple Heart Deputy Leonard Cantave, a 20-year veteran, pushed his fellow deputy out of the path of an oncoming vehicle before he was critically injured on the Florida Turnpike on December 27, 2025. Cantave was assisting at a crash scene when Lonnel Brinson Jr. struck him while driving intoxicated, launching the deputy into the air. This Wednesday Cantave was awarded the Gold Medal of Valor, Lifesaving Award, Purple Heart, and named him Distinguished Deputy of the Month. He was airlifted in critical condition, underwent multiple surgeries, and has since recovered enough to attend court.
