And you don’t have to see it. It is totally valid to see another interpretation as misguided. A good deal of literary criticism comes about through counterargument against a particular interpretation or another. To this day, people around the world write essays and even publish editions of The Odyssey that serve as challenges to the interpretations before them. People bring their perspective to art and inevitably find their view in objection of some before and after them — here, there’s an interpretation you disagree with along with reasons for doing so which is very much in the literary tradition. The beauty of literature and art as a whole is the way interpretation plays into our understanding and enjoyment of it. Culture, upbringing, prior exposure to literature and more all influence such. While lacking the full cultural context of a work certainly influences a read of it (and might invalidate it entirely from your perspective!), it does not full out invalidate that read of it from a reader response perspective. Here specifically, you argue that the cultural context of the story invalidates a specific interpretation of it. This actually touches on reception theory which holds that the cultural background of audience of a text influences how that audience interprets the text (Hall, 1973). It does hold that those sharing the cultural background with the author of a work are more likely to have an interpretation that matches the intended message of the author. However, reception theory further holds that the meaning of a text is constructed in part by the audience’s understanding of and encoding of it, not only the author’s intention. Using this, even oppositional reading (that is, the interpretation by an audience that is counter to the intention by the author of a text for any reason — including disparate cultures) is highlighted as a valid form of encoding of a work. Do you personally have to view an interpretation of JC as a love rival as valid? No. Does the divorce of a work from context such as genre conventions, popular tropes, and culture invalidate its interpretation outright? Also no. As for the allcheng/shipping aspect: shipping is primarily about liking content (fan-created or canon) about a relationship between two or more characters. It can involve stretching or deliberate misreads of the text to make a ship seem valid, surely; but the act of shipping itself doesn’t have to do with the canon of a work as much as a character within that canon. It’s fair to dislike a ship or a character people ship for any reason (including stretching of the text) but because a ship doesn’t require anything to be ‘valid’ in the first place, that reason cannot invalidate it. i love this panel, while Gojo & Nanami trusts each other, Nanami still didn’t want to hand over Sukuna’s finger he found to Gojo cause he knew Gojo would make Yuji eat it again. He didn’t want Yuji to go through that or even know about the finger & blame himself.
