When I started my firm, there were two questions that I got asked over and over again by friends and family: 1. How many clients do you have? 2. How many employees do you have? I learned very quickly that the bigger those two numbers were, the more praise I received. I put so much pressure on myself to grow my client list and employee list to impress the people who I looked up to the most. But years later, I looked around and realized, that for me, having the answers to those two questions be the smallest numbers is what made me the happiest. I don’t regret my firm owner journey, I learned so much and now I’m able to help others keep their own happiness at the forefront of all their business decisions! Happiness in our careers looks different for everyone. It’s so important to take the time to ask yourself what part of being an accountant/firm owner do you actually like? And what do you need in your professional life to feel genuine happiness?

At our firm, we track sales metrics like a SaaS company - MRR, CAC, LTV, and ACV (Avg Contract Value). The most interesting one to me is ACV. And it’s not about increasing prices. It’s more about aligning our value prop/pricing to the right client profile. I just ran a 5 part series on CAS sales and GTM strategy on the CAS Minute podcast. It’s just barely scratching the surface 😈.

@MeganTarnow It’s a lifetime metric, so not restricted to a time horizon, but for monthly / annual metrics, we would look more closely at averages in ACV & MRR by client

@MeganTarnow Yep, Lifetime Value. It’s an ongoing metric as we only have 2yrs of data, but helps us understand our return on marketing efforts and where to pour future marketing dollars
