What to do about this: 1️⃣Assessing saturation requires a formal assessment plan: Saturation should be evaluated through an explicit, preplanned process that links the chosen definition of saturation to concrete analytic steps. Without a saturation assessment plan, stopping decisions become ad hoc and impossible for readers to evaluate. 2️⃣Sample size is a starting point, not a stopping rule: Rather than fixed sample-size targets, we recommend flexible initial samples combined with iterative data collection and analysis. Saturation is reached through evidence of analytic exhaustion, not by hitting a predetermined number. Systematic, iterative coding allows researchers to track when themes, codes, or theoretical insights stabilize. Without transparent coding procedures, claims of saturation lack confirmability and credibility. 3️⃣Preliminary saturation judgments must be tested, not trusted: Our framework requires researchers to make an initial saturation judgment and then actively challenge it through additional data collection. This reduces false positives where saturation is declared prematurely and false negatives where resources are wasted. 4️⃣Credibility checks separate real saturation from researcher fatigue: Techniques such as triangulation, negative case analysis, member checking, and audit trails are essential for validating saturation claims.
