This one first landed as a free CD tucked inside UK's Mail on Sunday newspaper before hitting shelves worldwide a week later with that gorgeous lenticular cover. Every single person who attended his legendary 21 Nights In London residency also walked away with a copy. Similar to what he did for Hit n Run. Of note, the packaging didn't include a tracklist. On any version. Almost as if Prince was still shuffling the tracklist right up until the last minute. "Guitar" was the only official single, but "Chelsea Rodgers," "Future Baby Mama," and "The One U Wanna C" all got promo love overseas. While the album charted at #3 on the Billboard 200, many Billboard purists disagree since it was handed out with a newspaper whether you wanted it or not. Whatever your view, it was ingenious. Maggot Brain was produced by bandleader George Clinton and recorded at United Sound Systems in Detroit during late 1970 and early 1971. It also was the final LP recorded by the original Funkadelic lineup that included founding members Tawl Ross (guitar), Billy Nelson (bass), and Tiki Fulwood (drums). NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 16 Years Ago Today, Prince released his 35th studio album 20TEN into the world via a covermount with the Belgian newspapers Het Nieuwsblad & de Gentenaar and also the British newspaper Daily Mirror. It was the same way that he distributed Planet Earth and an ingenious way to boost the sales numbers, which would later be contested as whether they were "legitimate" sales. Subscribers should consider themselves blessed. Later on July 22, it was also be included with the German version of Rolling Stone. While Prince did have a 20TEN tour, very little of the album was ever played on the road with only a few exceptions. The album also featured a hidden track called Laydown at track 77. Tracks 10-76 were silent. Anybody out there still have their original copy? Where'd you find yours -- newsstand, mail order, or did a friend hand it to you years later? Tell us in the comments.
