@Peston When you lock down an economy and many firms end up taking on hige pikes of debt to survive isn't any wonder.

Are UK firms using the cover of inflation to increase profit margins? This Bank of England chart implies that may be happening. It shows that inflation in goods prices normally tracks changes in input prices (PPI), with a two month lag. Recently however that relationship has broken down. Goods price inflation is still rising while input price inflation is falling. Later today we will here from the chancellor what he has asked regulators to do about this

@KarlMathiesen As populations have increased water infrastructure hasn't increased to the same levels. This is less a climate problem more of a services planning issue and cost cutting.

@PGDynes Thankfully we now have very effective air conditioning. We have good knowledge of building design. We have effective sun creams, good material science for clothing. Access to water. Etc etc. Stop your doom

Today, New Zealand science is (Jerry Coyne’s words) circling the drain. And all because of juvenile politics & the racist canard that science is “Western” & needs “decolonising”. Science is not “Western”. It belongs to all humanity. Delved into it further (link to my blog in bio)

@LampLighterBot @MerrynSW What lesson is that. Bankruptcy? Decades of trying to climb back to a healthy financial position. Likely pushing back having children further. Creating further long-term chaos for the economy b

@fustrauted @MerrynSW Agreed, the help to buy scheme was just corralling the young and naive into negative equity. They were probably still at school 15 years ago and think zero bound rates and stupidly mispriced assets are the norm. I have sympathy for them, but they've learnt a valuable lesson.

@John__Pedersen @GeorgeMonbiot They're lazy. They couldn't be bothered to hook a house up to a grid or proper waste system. If you have a plot and want to go it alone they're happy.

Some of France's environmental initiatives, especially its training for public sector workers, are astonishing. It shows what can be done, even within the regrettable constraints of growth-based capitalism. My column. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

@GeorgeMonbiot “Regretable constraints of growth based capitalism” really all you climate obsessed twaks it boils down to wanting an end to capitalism. There's little care got the environment. If the choice was same environmental path but a socilist future you'd take it.

@moving_charlie What scaremongering nonsense. There's no economic prediction for another 6 months of rises. And house prices in good areas are hardly seeing a dent atm that means supply is still low.

'We can't pay an extra £1,400 a month' Voluntary forced sales began some time ago, and are well underway in growing numbers. Few are selling, most are chasing the market down. Rates will keep rising for 6 more months. It’s going to be brutal. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

Prigozhin is an abominable monster. If his coup is successful, Russia is not going to be a better or more peaceful place. Don’t cheer him on like he’s some hero or liberator.

@LampLighterBot @MerrynSW If younpurchased 15 years ago. The 25-40 year olds that likely purchased in the last 10 years will not have won. The ones sitting on the gains are the 50+ generation that prob also don't have a mortgage anymore.

@MerrynSW It goes far deeper than that, 15 years of QE and ZIRP have just further entrenched wealth and intergenerational inequalities. Even those complaining about high mortgage rates are still sitting on vast unearned gains over that period.
