I have to admit that absolute visual realism is not what I'm looking for in a game. I much prefer a stylized visual look that takes me into an alternate reality.
Yet, with Max Payne we purposely chose to use photo-sourced art in the game, but at the same time we knew that it wouldn't come across as totally realistic. The tech back then didn't support true realism. But it does now. And while true realism can work for some games, it's not a selling point to me. I'd rather play a game with unique visuals that creates a world aesthetic I can't see IRL.
I'd love to hear other thoughts on this.

Graphical realism in video games really sucks. Imo games with “aged” graphics feel much more timeless precisely because they lie in that sort of uncanny valley. It’s like entering a dream world and that made the sense of escapism much more profound.

@bensprattjourn Difference between this season and 12-13 is that only one player came in that season (Anita), and the club spent £250 mil on two strikers, a RW and a midfielder last summer. We did go out the cups earlier in 12-13, but we did have Europa till April.

Both are teams who lost their star striker (Ba/Isak) and with it appeared to lose any ability to play football, with the exception of one midfield talisman (Cabaye/Bruno). Newcastle have once in their history lost more than 23 matches in a season, but who’d bet against that now?

This Newcastle season has at various points had similarities to past campaigns – 2003-04 or 2023-24, for eg. It now increasingly feels like 2012-13, which was the last time they lost more matches in all comps (23) than they have this season (21)
