she stepped closer, leaning slightly
over the desk to glance at the
screen, one hand braced against the
counter. her shoulder brushed
samira’s as she did, absent,
unthinking.
“de vera,” she repeated under her breath, scanning quickly. “what’s up .ᐣ”

she was halfway through scribbling
something across the back of her
glove—messy, slanted numbers that
only made sense to her—when
samira’s voice cut through.
“…hm?”
then it clicked.

she definitely wasn’t buying that.
she reached over without really
thinking, nudging samira’s shoulder
lightly with her own again, gentler
this time.
“you look like you got hit by the fire
too.”

leena watched her for a second
longer than she meant to.
the way samira pressed her palm
into her eye. the slight delay before
she answered. the kind of tired that
didn’t come from one shift, but a
dozen stacked on top of each other.

“…dr. abbot,” she said, a little breath
catching like she’d just remembered
how to be a person again.
she straightened instinctively,
tossing the gloves into the bin, suddenly aware of how tired she must look.

she was half talking to herself, half to
the chart, already moving as she
spoke, pushing a loose strand of hair
back with her wrist.
the hallway buzzed around her, too
bright and too loud, but she barely
registered it.
“signed out bed four, five’s waiting on imaging, and—”

fingers flexing once they were free,
like she was trying to shake the shift
out of her hands.
“cbc’s already sent, lactate’s trending
down, and she’s responding to fluids—”

then she looked at him properly.
“i’ve got it under control,” she said, a
little too quickly, like she was trying
to get ahead of whatever he was
about to say.
“…but if you think i’m missing something, i’d rather you tell me now than later.”

subconsciously wiping her hands on
her scrubs, like that would somehow
make her look less… resident.
“—in an hour,” she finished, quieter now, glancing back at the chart like she needed to prove she knew what she was doing.

when she realized he’d been
standing there longer than she
thought.
“…so we push fluids, recheck lactate
in—”
she faltered, just slightly.

automatically, and that’s when she
noticed him approaching, with a
little girl in tow.
he wasn’t like the other parents. not
distracted, not chatting, not
checking his phone.
“…hi,” she started, lip curling into a polite smile. “i’m— leena.”

softly, steadying her, crouching
down to fix a crooked strap on her backpack.
“good day?”
“yeah!” elliot nodded quickly, then pointed over her shoulder. “and— and my friend lena— look! aunty lee, her name’s lena too—”
