Shannon Miranda and Miranda’s Rescue have finally been exposed for what they truly are — a fraudulent, abusive operation that exploited desperate animals and the people who loved them. Over 600 dogs entrusted to this so-called “rescue” are now feared dead or missing. Whistleblowers have uncovered mass graves, trail-camera footage of bodies being dumped, and dogs being euthanized after families were told they had been adopted — all while Miranda collected intake fees and continued taking in more animals.This is not a rescue. This is a criminal enterprise hiding behind a nonprofit label. Yet for years, State Senator and Congressional candidate Mike McGuire has associated with, supported, and even served as an auctioneer for Shannon Miranda and Miranda’s Rescue. McGuire has platformed and lent his name to this man despite repeated warnings from people who knew the truth about what was really happening inside that organization. Now that the bodies are being uncovered — both literally and figuratively — the question must be asked: Why was Mike McGuire so comfortable aligning himself with Shannon Miranda? And what does it say about his judgment that he continued to support and promote someone who was allegedly running a dog-killing operation under the cover of animal rescue? The nonprofit Miranda’s Rescue must be immediately dissolved. Its board members must be held accountable. And Shannon Miranda should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for animal cruelty and fraud. But accountability shouldn’t stop there. Anyone who knowingly supported, defended, or helped elevate Shannon Miranda — including elected officials like Mike McGuire — should also be forced to answer for it. The people of Humboldt County and California deserve leaders who don’t cozy up to monsters for political gain or photo-ops. This level of association with a man like Shannon Miranda should be disqualifying.
