They still don’t get it None of them have ever got it. Stop banning skills of the game. Incentivise kicking. If you want more. But some of the best goals ever scored had several hand passes in a row. Not to mention it’s been trialled and it’s utterly failed. It’s too much of an intervention cognitively. Forget the hand pass ffs

About 40% of frees in last year’s championship took longer than 20 seconds.

@TsuDhoNim But there are loads of grey areas here, going to be very hard to referee. I can ignore instances in my data where there is a free and something else (injury/sub etc…).

@gaelicstats Yeah. The ones resulting in direct shots I'd imagine most in contention with this. So the <50m from opposition goal stuff mainly. Interesting comparison would be outfielders vs keepers (given the other pause caveat), but wouldn't imagine that's pre-tagged stuff.

@TsuDhoNim And obviously where on the pitch is going to have a big impact. So the average figure is going to be massively skewed.

@TsuDhoNim The short answer is a lot of frees take longer than 20 seconds

@gaelicstats Hey Rob, anything available in relation to stats on the expanded 20 second limit for frees? I'd have thought, anecdotally, most direct shots were +30 seconds (+more if keeper involved) so possibly a fairly dramatic change.

@Paddyaherne I'm not sure. But the data they've used previously was always championship. That report that came out in 2023 for John Tobin's committee was only championship games. I agree it's not ideal though.

@m_brosnan Don’t know that. Can see why they don’t to go down the road of that then tackle, but there is a way to interpret existing rules that incentivises tackler and encourages pressing.

@gaelicstats Yeah, that's it exactly. If you had an Aussie Rules tackle, immediately it incentivises everyone to press everywhere. You don't have to go to that extreme either. This was McGeeney's idea when he was on the rules committee, FWIW.

Some quick thoughts on the goalkeeper debate 👇 The problem in Gaelic football is control. We need to make it harder for teams to control the ball.

@m_brosnan Not that football needs a tackle like aussie rules, but enforcing steps and being much more on the side of the tackler I think would have a big impact.

@m_brosnan In the international rules series (I know not everyone's favourite) they have a tackle, but the amount of tackles that occur in a game is very small. But the threat if being disposed leads to more chaos.

No short kickouts in 2025, so maybe a bit different. It would be interesting to see the data the FRC have on kickout duration, that they’ve based this rule change upon. Has that data been made available by the FRC? Surely they haven’t based a rule change on anecdotal evidence?
Gaelic Stats@gaelicstats

I took a look at the actual data. From a sample of ~400 kickouts in the 2024 Championship. 28% of the time the ball was out of play for longer than 20 seconds.

@TsuDhoNim Vast majority just feel like normal play. I think the score, time in game etc... will all play a bigger part than making a hard and fast rule of x seconds.

@gaelicstats While doing it... did you pick up a gut feel for how many of those were genuine vs how many you'd have considered intentional delaying?

Stuck a timer on the Derry v Galway kickout just to see. It’s not Seiko timing but it’s definitely “in and around 20 seconds”!! Crucial point in game, extremely harsh, not 30-40 seconds, and I’ve better things to be doing on a Monday morning than acting as oversight for the FRC.

@m_brosnan @TerenceR78 Shouldn’t this be based on evidence tho? Rather than just pick a number. What’s the average?. They could have access to this kinds of info if they just picked up the phone.

@TerenceR78 This is purely a guess. It was in the rulebook as "waste time". So I wonder were they asked, what do you consider to be wasting time and came up with 'guidance' of 20 seconds. My point is that they should still notify people of that

The FRC have a real communication problem. This is the only place I saw a reference to a 20-second limit since they met with intercounty referees last week. Maybe they let teams know but the public matter too. They should do weekly updates. x.com/iGaelicCoach/s…
