I’m old school. Yes, we have 3DSMax, Blender, AutoCAD, Maya, Adobe & more––but before that process––the feel of a pencil, the scribble of a note, the ponder of: does that work? How do I to get from A to B? what happens if? What does history tell us about naval ship design?

I generally don’t comment on anything beyond the project but: it’s time Star Trek was given a break. It needs time, for new energy and new ideas. The current teams disbanded completely and an undetermined period of reflection and rest.

If you think of the average distance of eye or camera from model, in real terms it would be 1000s of meters. Scale matters! Aztec would all but disappear: try it on a train, plane, ship today. They look smooth. You have to get real close to see the panelling.

IMHO: I still think the so called ‘Aztec’ hull plating used by many modellers, physical or digital, is over done. Seems an increasingly failure to understand relationship between distance & scale. The distances from a model or camera to a model means it should be subtle..

OTD 22 March 2367 GALAXY reenters FED space. Arguments follow in the ADM about if abandoning the Borg mission was right or wrong. Either way, with the post Borg attack vulnerability, issues in the Klingon Empire, Romulans back & complex Cardassian relations, GALAXY is welcomed.

@rucker_andy Stage 9 followed many of the sets rigidly and made questionable decisions and poor management to turn it into a game than simulation which ultimately aided its demise.

@galaxyclassproj That’s what is really a bummer about the Epnterprise Construction Project and Stage 9 getting shut down; they gave a really good feel for what the Galaxy was “actually” like, free from the limitations of TV production.

Phenomenal to think most of the sets we see in TNG do not actually match the internal space or external hull profile of the ship. It makes you think just how different a Galaxy Class is than we saw. Yes, sets give an idea, but serving on one would be quite different to on screen.

Classic Star Trek visuals, now in a cinematic aspect ratio! It's a relatively small thing in the grand scheme but seeing these sets as if it was a motion picture, brings them to life in a whole new. From TOS, TNG, VOY and DS9 each show is given that love and it is very cool!

@doffcocker I think the problem is that artists working full in CGI lose the human instinct of scale, movement, physics etc. Using a physical model acts as a buffer and reminds them to think more carefully about things. Aka starships not acting like X wing fighters! 🤦‍♂️

OTD 24 Feb 2367 Starfleet's orders for GALAXY to abandon its Borg mission, leaves the Federation subspace network. The signal moves slower to GALAXY. ODY enroute to GALAXY at Warp 9. ENTD TNG S4. CHALL/MAG: DECK 9 gets new carpets as part of fitting out.

OTD 19 Feb 2367 Starfleet attempts to discreetly mobilise in fear that with GALAXY beyond the subspace network it may not receive withdraw orders in time to avoid 'poking the hive'. ODY is weeks away from GAL but sets an intercept course for the 2nd time in just over month.

Hulls 9-12 drop additional arrays and are fitted with an updated mark phaser system anyway which weren’t ready at the time. GCP wanted to be seen to providing a visible response to the Borg which is strikingly obvious with VENT & AND. They would however be unique in the GC fleet.
