This block of flats on Albion Street is on the site of North Shields’ first purpose built Catholic Church. St Cuthbert’s was constructed here in 1821, catering for a fast growing congregation north and south of the river, which previously had to travel all the way into Newcastle by boat, foot and horseback. It was stone built, featuring a tower with four pinnacles at the top and windows featuring Mary, St Oswin, St Cuthbert and Thomas Beckett. I can only presume the convent I mentioned the other day was related to this particular church, making it an important catholic centre on Tyneside. It was sadly demolished in the 70s and replaced with the parish centre a few hundred metres west.
