Your character's gender is never addressed (and your pronouns are never used). There's no reference to the stigma or general societal opinion on being gay. You can romance whichever of the three leads (aka The Holy Trinity aka The Good The Bad and The Sexy) regardless of who you choose to play as. ALSO, yes, you have the option to play the game without going for a romance route, and you will still be able to get the good ending.
