What happened to @hatakesenjus for that Jiriaya post shows once again how performative Naruto fandom is when it comes to morals. Leaving aside that the majority of the Dan supporters are SS supporters who think that DanTsu = SS, when in reality DanTsu is just another NaruSaku parallel, the fact that they jump Jiriaya for his darker character attributes tells you all they don’t understand about storytelling. First of all, Dan was a simple narrative point in Tsunade’s subplot. We don’t get to explore his darker traits like any other character because he’s used only as that - a device. A short blip in Tsunade’s story to highlight the source of her trauma. The reason they even have the chance to jump on Jiriaya is because Jiraiya is an established supporting character whose exploration happens all throughout the story. He has good traits AND bad traits. And these kiddies only chose to perform the morally superior persona with him/his fans on his bad traits, profiting of the fact that Dan is too less of a variable to be able to form a holistic view on him since he’s unexplored. Why? Simple. Because he’s not a full fledged character, but moreso a device as I said. They’re all devices for storytelling, yes. But unlike Jiriaya, Dan does not function as an established character the way Jiraiya does. He’s often criticised as objectifying Tsunade, but forget that Tsunade has the agency to impose limits to this side of his character and SHE STILL WANTED HIM IN HER LIFE. Like why are y’all infantilising a 50 years old woman who can punch him into oblivion if she wants to? Not even bringing sexuality into discussion because here I’m afraid I’d lose most of y’all, plus some of y’all are children, so I’ll digress… That is, if we are looking at them as “real people” which they’re not. They’re lines of ink on paper in the end, something y’all CONVENIENTLY drop aside while ATTACKING A REAL HUMAN BEING. The cunningness and hypocrisy is astounding with y’all. Y’all cry wolf and then play victims when y’all’s mask falls off and you’re caught red handed. Bullies crying bully while bullying others.
