NOTE: I am currently sharing old newspaper articles about Quilp aka John (Jacky) Baramba Lynch, an Australian Indigenous soccer player from the early 1900s. Some articles reflect views and language of the time which may offend. I certainly do not agree with those views.

I assume the large WC training camp is not only to cover for injuries and ensuring decent training games but looking forward to Asian Cup. Duke will retire post-WC. Could Behich and Boyle? Irvine? Places will be up for grabs soon.

Seen a lot of 'where have all these Arsenal fans come from?' remarks today. Not surprised. Always felt from my time covering the PL & meeting Aussies at games over there that Arsenal & Man U were just about equal in 2nd place behind Liverpool for the biggest Aus based following.

@zanofc @Elfvandel20 @AnnaHarrington Ventforet Kofu won the Emporers Cup in Japan and competed in the Asian continental competition from J2. So being in the 2nd div is not an issue. Unsure if they had to also comply with licensing to compete. But Heidelberg should be in if they won the cup, licensing notwithstanding

Football Australia has confirmed the AFC ruled Aus Cup runner-up Heidelberg United ineligible for the direct slot in next season’s ACL2. Melbourne Victory take the slot as highest ranked Aus team on A-League Men table behind Newcastle (ACL Elite) + Adelaide (ACL Elite playoffs)

@VinceRugari But the other point is, Mo Toure got a cap, then spent two years in Denmark before another and look at him now. That is the path for Younis and others, and it won't hurt if they make it.

@VinceRugari I'd say generally speaking he doesn't see the ALM form as a marker of quality for untested players. Sometimes yes, but prefers players forged in Europe or US . ALM picks otherwise those with overseas experience like Duke and Behich and the long-standing 3rd keeper spot.

Door closed on Younis, it appears, for this World Cup with the other City boys flying out - but first-time call-ups for Bennie and Raphael show that Popa is still open to new players with the right profiles for the gaps he sees in the Socceroos' prospective 26-man squad.

@VinceRugari They play against experienced NPL players and often ex-ALM players, which is a good learning experience.

The thing about the A-L academies in state competitions is... what else can we do? Ideally we'd have academy teams playing against each other but costs too much. The tyranny of distance. One of many little compromises our game has to make because of where we are. They all add up

A lot of Lou's points are strong and interesting (in particular the 'brand damage' caused by pitting A-L academy sides vs local teams in state competitions - this doesn't get talked about enough) but his conclusions from there are diametrically opposed to mine

@PaulMavroudis The cup just feels like filler fodder for those ALM clubs who don't try and win it. And forgotten by the time the season starts. Macarthur won it twice, yet what should be an achievement elicits shrugs by the time they finish 7th months later.

I don't know if Lou's opinion is so much controversial as it is stupid, but I can kinda see where he''s coming from - the FFA Cup wasn't necessary (the "healing" idea was laughable), the food angle was and is patronising as fuck, and the A-League clubs didn't get much out of it.
Chief@SrSittingBull

According to @Lou_Sticca the A-league attendances started to drop off because of the @AustraliaCup and confusing the marketing of a sterile league with no baggage.

And the A-League Men GB has been jointly won with only 11 goals - the equal second worst on record (with Season 2 when there were 5 less games). This is not anti- Jovanovic or Cosgrove, just the last 2 seasons it has been far below the average.
Garry McKenzie@garrymck

Last season the ALM Golden Boot race was won with only 13 goals. It was the lowest since 12 was won the GB for Smeltz in 08/09. In the intervening years there was a 15 and a couple of 16s, and 5 seasons with 20 or more. The current GB leader has 11 with 1 game to go.

It is properly a mixture of the money no longer there for higher quality visa strikers, and Australian strikers being younger and less experienced (and Taggart's age and Perth's woes - probably Kosta too.) This may extend to chance creators too.

But you cannot blame better defences for these results. Overall the competition-wide goals per season has been trending up the previous 3 years with a new record last year. But last year's high wasn't explained by a single 20 goals a season Maclaren.
