🎁 FREE GIFT: FULL ROSENSHINE CPD PACK!
To celebrate 50 consecutive weeks of ⚗️DistillED, I’ve put together something quite cool…
Over the past year, Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction has been one of the most requested topics from teachers and school leaders. So I’ve put together a complete, ready-to-run CPD pack to help schools explore and implement all 10 principles.
The download includes:
→ 10 CPD PowerPoints (ready for 30–45 min sessions)
→ 10 strategy checklists (practical classroom actions)
→ 10 planning templates (put principles into action )
→ Covers all 10 of Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction
Everything you need to run ten focused CPD sessions — one for each principle.
👉 REPOST and comment ROSENSHINE and I’ll DM you the link. Cheers!
⏰ Available until Sunday 22 March!

@mrallanmaths It’s almost like there are levels within a level! The old R1 and R2 have some good equation questions.
English

@mrallanmaths I do it in a similar way but initially focusing on what the negative sign does to a number...

Great blog. This resonates:
Here again is Goodhart’s warning. Once the measure (grades) became the goal, it obscured the very thing it was meant to reveal. The number may look reassuring, but it may hide a hollow core. The measure, repurposed as a target, has lost its value.

I have recently written a new curriculum for 5-18 mathematics.
I think the approach to curriculum design is unlike anything that currently exists. I also think it is precisely what we need.
I will publish a full discourse shortly. But first, I would like to stress test my thinking.
At 7pm on Thursday, I will present my ideas in a live webinar.
I would like to invite all those interested in mathematics curriculum design to join me, hear me out, and share your thoughts.
If you would like to attend, please send me a DM with your email and I will add you to the invitation list, with a link to the webinar.
Being able to articulate the thinking behind the curriculum and receive feedback and criticism from expert mathematics educators and mathematicians will be enormously helpful.
Hope to see you there.

@mrallanmaths 'Fact families' is how I approach it now, provided they have grasped multiplication.

@brynspiration @MrMcEnaney @heraldscotland Also the huge workload burden for teachers in the way N4 is assessed. Each unit takes hours and hours to mark, record the results and analyse.
English

@MrMcEnaney @heraldscotland It's the way National 4 is assessed that's the problem. You can spoon-feed a student through Nat 4 maths and they can pass it with no understanding or ability to work at that level. We urgently need external assessments.
English

Are National 4 qualifications fit for purpose?
For @heraldscotland today I've had a look at the stats for students going from Nat 4 > Nat 5.

English

@MrMcEnaney This is without doubt one of the biggest workload issues I have in my job. My view is that N4 in Maths/Apps need a final external exam to make it more credible. The SQA have recognised dual presentations as an issue as well.

English

An important point: having kids do 2 levels of a course at once often effectively means having them do 2 different courses. The workload implications for staff and pupils are obvious.
Kaetror@Kaetror
@EuanYours @MrMcEnaney For a subject like biology the N4 and N5 courses are totally different - they don't cover the same content. So it's not a dual level class, it's dual *course*. For physics we don't have that issue, but the testing demands cause issues.
