I was thinking today about those awful COVID lockdown days. Let me be clear: quarantine itself is not immoral. In fact, Scripture repeatedly commands forms of quarantine. Under the Mosaic Law, those with certain contagious diseases were isolated from the community until they were no longer a threat. The principle was simple: protect the healthy by temporarily separating the sick. What we experienced during COVID was fundamentally different. For perhaps the first time in history, healthy people were treated as though they were sick. Entire populations were confined to their homes, businesses were forcibly closed, churches were shut down, children were kept out of school, and ordinary freedoms were suspended—not because individuals were known to be ill, but because they might become ill. The biblical model is targeted and proportionate. It isolates the infected while allowing the healthy to continue living, working, worshiping, and caring for one another. It recognizes both the reality of disease and the importance of preserving normal human life. Reasonable people can debate what leaders knew at the time or whether they acted with good intentions. But looking back, I think we should be willing to admit that quarantining the healthy on such a massive scale was a profound mistake. Scripture gives us a better pattern: quarantine the sick, care for the vulnerable, and preserve the liberty and responsibilities of everyone else. As Christians, our standard should not be political ideology or public panic. I always stress this…he has authority delegated to YOU buy God, and you’ve submitted it to him willingly the day you said I do…and you continue to choose it or not choose it…the only consequence you face for bucking it is from God. No husband has authority to punish IN ANY FORM his wife for anything, ever. He is commanded by God to live with you in a gentle, understanding way and love you as Christ loves the Church even in if your attitude is awful.

Humanity is not alone in the universe. In fact, we are not even alone on Earth. The Bible never presents creation as an empty universe containing God, humanity and a few invisible ghosts floating around in some immaterial dimension. It describes an ordered cosmos populated by intelligent, embodied beings whom we commonly call angels—messengers, rulers, principalities, powers, cherubim, sons of God and armies of heaven. The sons of God also bear the image of their Father. Humanity is not unique merely because we reflect God’s nature. We belong to a larger divine household containing different orders of intelligent sons, created for different realms, bodies, authorities and purposes. These beings existed before humanity. They witnessed the foundations of the Earth. They travel, speak, eat, fight, seize men, open prisons, destroy cities and sometimes appear so completely human that people entertain them without realizing what they are. “Angel” describes an office or assignment, not a biological species—and Scripture never describes these beings as imaginary or nonphysical. Nor have all of them remained somewhere far away. Satan is called the ruler of this world. The rebellious Watchers descended upon Mount Hermon, took women and produced the Nephilim. Angels appeared throughout biblical history, while demons—the disembodied spirits of dead Nephilim—continued operating upon the Earth after the Flood. Daniel reveals heavenly princes exercising authority behind earthly kingdoms. Paul warns that our struggle ultimately involves rulers, authorities and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Earth is not an isolated biological experiment in an otherwise vacant universe. It stands at the center of a much larger conflict involving multiple orders of intelligent creation. Humanity does occupy a particular place within that household. We were fashioned from the Earth and given dominion over it. When humanity fell, the eternal Son of God entered our order, took on human nature and came as the Last Adam to redeem Adam’s race. Through Christ, redeemed humanity will ultimately be raised, glorified and elevated above the angels. But we have never been God’s only intelligent sons. We have never been alone. The modern world may eventually be forced to acknowledge that nonhuman intelligences exist. If that happens, Christians should not panic, abandon Scripture or immediately assume these beings evolved on some distant planet. We should recognize that the biblical worldview already accounts for nonhuman intelligence—and warns us that some of it is hostile, deceptive and intensely interested in humanity. The real question is no longer whether something else is here.
