Anger seared through me when I saw Soumya Vishwanathan’s killers in the Saket district court this afternoon. My first instinct was to want to stand up and punch them hard in the face. They looked rough and lost. Soumya’s mother later said her stomach was churning while Judge Pandey was reading the verdict. Didn’t have the courage to tell her that my mind too had been spinning with anxiety. As journalists we think we get numb to what’s happening in the news. But this was a calamity in our own home. The gruesome murder of Soumya Vishwanathan wasn’t a story. She was one of us. This could have been any of us. All of us from the Headlines Today days remember Soumya fondly. She will live forever in my heart and mind as the emblem of the ideal TV producer.
