Leider Paywall.

@powellAtlantic yeah, but you see, there was no saltwater between their center and at least one of their colonies, so it doesn't count as colonialism apparently.

@gei_andre @simonmontefiore I wasn’t trying to write a history in one post. The Qing expanded into and controlled Mongol territories and Soviet influence was important to Mongolia’s independence. My point was that saying Inner Mongolia was “conquered by China in the 20th century” skips centuries of context.

There is great confusion about what Decolonization and indeed Colonization means. The fact is: it means very little except 'a culture or mindset you dont like.' For whatever reason. And that usually means: the West. Since the West decolonized long ago, it really means the Western liberal democracies. It is a smart criticism because it means nothing, and hence it is hard to disagree with nothing and furthermore since the West itself is embroiled in a mix of moral fuddlement, political paralysis and cultural self hatred, you can be sure that Western leaders are very embarrassed by the very use of the word and many in the West will actually agree - even though they are not sure what they are agreeing with. it is a very useful rhetorical tool because Westerns are always going to be worried to answer in any meaningful way other than guilt and shame; and it is a growing industry - perfect for endless conferences. Like this one. The reality of empires and colonies is something else entirely. In early modern times, the Ottoman Turks conquered colonized enslaved exploited murdered and forcefully converted millions and ruled a vast tricontinental empire for four centuries; the Western powers led by Spain Portugal France and Britain later joined by Italy Germany Belgium also conquered colonized enslaved exploited murdered and converted using missionaries huge empires across the continents. The Iberians lost much of their empires first; the Ottoman sultanate-caliphate started to decolonize with the Greek war of independence in 1820s and totally disintegrated in 1918; the British and French decolonized between 1940s and Sixties. You could argue the Americans and Soviets comported themselves like anti-imperial imperialists during the Cold War and after - and indeed today's America toys at times with neo-tsarist expansionism - Greenland etc . Thats it - noone in the Legacy Powers Britain or France etc seems keen on colonizing anything now; there are almost no colonizations left to decolonize - though many love to denounce their own country's past which is for some a most enjoyable enriching and virtuous pastime. But in real life, empire and colonization are happening, often perpetrated by the very proponents of antiWest rhetoric. Russia is attempting to retake its limotrophic empire in Ukraine right now the old -fashioned way: by conquest and killing; a phalanx of Middle East neo-imperial powers are engaged in tournaments of power in failing states like Somalia, Libya and benighted Sudan; Iran established an informal empire across Iraq Syria Lebanon Yemen in its Six Armies strategy - its final destiny as yet undecided on the battlefield of the Third Gulf War; and Turkish leaders now regularly and openly declare their wish to reassert Ottomanist power in former Ottoman vilayets Syria Lebanon Israel, and former Ottoman cities Damascus Beirut Jerusalem.... So imperialism and colonialism just mean: other people, but never you.

At the World Decolonization Forum, Dr. Esra Albayrak, the daughter of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, spoke about their endeavour to “decolonize” the West. The first phase of their plan as she says is not within the political realm, but the realm of knowledge and thought. Their alliance is not advocating for a world without the West, rather, there is an open invitation for the West to accept its own “decolonization”. The current centers of knowledge located in Paris, London, Amsterdam. And New York; need to be replaced by new centers in Istanbul, Jakarta, Addis Abbaba, Rabat, Cairo, and Gaza.

@gei_andre @MattHodgkinson4 If you believe you won’t understand something watching one of the most exposition heavy movies this year, like Nolan actually believed we were dumb and wouldn’t remember shit from the middle of the movie, that might reveal something about your faculties you’ll dislike

@Urban_Mongol @simonmontefiore I notice that you did not adress the other regions and that "Outer Mongolia" (a chinese centric term) only remained independent because of soviet pressure. And btw. the Qing empire conquered it, they didn't simply administer it like you stated.

@gei_andre @simonmontefiore Inner Mongolia wasn’t “conquered” by China in the 20th century. It had already been administered under the Qing Empire for centuries and remained with its successor states after 1911, while Outer Mongolia became independent. History is more complicated than slogans.

The toxic discourse around The Odyssey fundamentally sucks because any film by any director has no implied obligation to depict any story in any particular way. A guy decided to make a movie he wanted to make exactly how he wanted to make it.

Elliot Page says she felt “terrified” playing the right hand man of Odysseus in ‘The Odyssey.’ “The impacts of war, the brutality of war and violence. And so I think I was just terrified and just wanting to make sure I did an okay job and pulled it off in the movie.”

@pureMetatron albeit it is weird. With all those Italian Americans they have, they really seem to have a problem casting them as Italians. I once joked to a colleague that he should try, then Hollywood can say they cast an Italian to play a roman.

@RS613506 the daughter of a racist and nationalist turkish man is complaining about colonization? The very thing the ottoman empire, which her father glamourizes, is guilty off.

I get it. For some folks, Helen of Troy being black just seems obviously wrong. "Greek people aren't black!" Well, sure. But almost nobody in any filmed version of the Odyssey was Greek, and none of you lot cared. "But they were white! And Greeks are white!" So? "It'll kill my suspension of disbelief!" Ok, believing in a giant cyclops is no problem, but you can't believe in a black woman playing a role? I think you're telling the truth, but audiences don't agree. All across the world, people are watching the movie, and most of them aren't having a problem buying Lupita Nyong'o as Helen (and Clytemnestra). This argument only works for a grumpy minority. "They wouldn't cast an all-white Roots!" You're right about that, but c'mon, don't you see the difference? Roots is specifically ABOUT race and slavery. The Odyssey is about a hero trying to make it home and retake his throne. Race is not a topic. "Race-switching in roles only goes one way!" For a long time, that was true in the other direction (John Wayne as Genghis Khan!), but it's true that generally these days it's non-white actors replacing traditionally white roles. And so? This isn't really an argument. And I think it'd be good if we did more color-blind casting in every direction, assuming we can sell audiences on them (and I think we mostly can). Focus less on race, more on the stories!

@pureMetatron And don't forget the classical "Jesus argument", somehow such people can never think of anything else. I at least made the effort to ask whether they would be fine with casting Amaterasu as a black woman.

No one thinks that. Why isn’t a single one of you buzz word addicted lunatics ever capable of NOT building a straw-man? This is embarrassing at this point. No one is saying non-Whites appeared modernly. My gosh the sheer stupidity. The POINT is that being ethnically Greeks IS A THING! You had some White people living in the Kingdom of Kush in modern day Sudan, they are in iconography. So now we are gonna make a movie where we race swap the main queen of Kush Amanirenas who was Black into a White blonde chick, while having white soldiers saying “we are Kushites from Meroe!”. None of you on the left would be ok with that, so stop pretending to not understand the argument. The intellectual dishonest is ridiculous.
Gaby✨@godbritbrit

Racism plays an important role into thinking that black, asian or even indigenous populations magically appeared during modern times! There’s no “only one race” when you are talking about the same Ancient Greece that used to have trade routes with Africa and Asia, for example

The ancient Mediterranean was certainly multi-racial. No one claimed a utopia. The distance from Athens to Benghazi is about a 1-2 day boat ride. Corinth was a massive hub full of merchants and travelers from Asia Minor, the Levant, and North Africa. The idea of a race as we understand it doesn’t even make sense in the ancient world. They didn’t define racial groups in the modern political sense. Language and religion were far more important as almost everyone in the region was some various shade of brown.

So.

"The Odyssey is gonna be a success and make a lot of money! You lost BIGOTS!" 1 - Most people never said it was gonna flop. But most importantly 2 - You know who else was very successful? Top Nazi elites who personally accumulated massive wealth and power through corruption, bribery, and state-sponsored theft. Evil does succeed temporally, but will always fall in the end. The money Nolan makes is irrelevant, as it does not cancel out the moral bankruptcy which is the basis of his movie, and the unjust deletion of Greek history and people. What Nolan did to the Greeks can never be considered a success because it's morally unjust, no matter what.
