@NewLeftEViews As ever with Lenin, the historical context within which he worked is glossed over or rarely considered. From the moment of power, he and the Bolsheviks were never at peace, they faced constant internal and external threats of annihilation from 1917 until his death.

The core ‘in hindsight’ argument here shouldn’t be too controversial. The reason it is is because Lenin was an utterly ruthless but also very compelling theorist and individual, and because the state he created defeated Germany, which has mooted discussions about who was ‘right’.

I'm really sorry but if you read non-Leninist Socialist critiques of Leninism from between 1917-1930 and come away with the impression that Lenin was right I just do not think you're politically going to make it. It's actually pretty hard for me to think of anyone more vindicated by history than anti-Bolshevik Social Democrats who wanted to keep parliamentarianism or a mixed economy. Martov, Bauer, Kautsky, Adler and Zhordania were obviously correct about almost everything.
