Research shows that stress and viral infections are triggers, but for many there is only stress (no infection). Viral infections are themselves physiologically stressful (they activate the HPA axis, cause sickness behaviour, etc).

@arisonsned @cfs_jo @MEAssociation @CarolanneWilso4 @maxwele2 Yes this aligns with what I was told and what I've tried to reflect in that info box - that stress alone isn't the cause but that symptoms may start to appear after a period of stress, as evidenced by Jo's and other people's experiences. Sorry if it's not clear!

@cfs_jo @arisonsned @MEAssociation @CarolanneWilso4 @maxwele2 Yes I don't think so either! Rather that the stressful event may trigger the post-viral response, but like you say there's still seems to be a lot of uncertainty around the exact cause. Hopefully more funding can be gained for research to improve understanding

In truth we can’t always know the root cause but I’m certain stress alone does not cause it.
