#DrSTONE Behind Story 04 “Scientifically Rigorous” This happened after I completed and submitted Chapter 1 of Dr. STONE. After Editor S-san left, my new editor—who had just become my editor—told me, “Dr. STONE will be created with scientific rigor.” “…I’m sorry, what?” I was surprised and asked again to make sure. Because the story begins with humans turning into stone—and even returning to human form—I had always thought Dr. STONE was a fantasy. I approached it as a “fantasy world that playfully explores science.” But once again, I was told: “It must be scientifically rigorous.” Okay, this was a serious issue. A very serious one. Because I studied physics in order to draw SF manga. “Scientific rigor” wasn’t just important to me—it was the very area where I could contribute the most. In Weekly Shōnen Jump, I was surrounded by geniuses. But if the work required strict scientific thinking, I believed this could be my small but unique strength. However, as the artist of Dr. STONE, “scientific rigor” was almost like a disaster-level constraint. To be scientifically consistent, I had to consider whether materials and tools could actually be obtained. The reference materials from the editorial department weren’t enough—everything had to be created in a way that Senku himself could realistically build. For example, even when drawing something as simple as a cart, we had to think about how the wooden parts were connected. My staff would ask about every detail. That alone was challenging—but also fun. The real difficulty was whether the energy and resources Senku used could realistically be obtained from the surrounding environment. And that wasn’t all. In my view, Senku is someone who respects nature. After 3,700 years without humans, the natural world of Japan would be something he deeply values. If so, his actions shouldn’t completely destroy the surrounding environment. After all, he’s a scientist. A true scientist wouldn’t act that way. So I had to consider even that in every scene. Around Ishigami Village, I also depicted the gradual depletion of trees as a result of Senku’s activities. Working under the condition of “scientific rigor” was extremely demanding. But about two years into the serialization, Inagaki-sensei told me, “Jump doesn’t require that level of strictness.” “Oh!” That’s a valuable lesson. As the story progressed, more supernatural elements appeared, and more moments were glossed over with a simple “there’s something behind it.” So gradually, I allowed for a bit more scientific flexibility in my work. Even so, when it came to the scientific themes themselves, I always did my best to depict them as accurately as possible. Even if it wasn’t very “Jump-like”… because scientific rigor is something I truly love. Once it’s in my hands, it’s a toy I can never let go of. instagram.com/p/DXXaal3lKvN/ Yuzuriha illustration for the Jump meeting. Since I thought of Dr. STONE as a fantasy, even her clothing was depicted undergoing petrification. instagram.com/p/DXX2MGIlPfx/ Detailed designs for serialization. You can see how much thought went into Senku’s hairstyle until the very end. There’s even a version with a Dr. Xeno-like feel. Later, Dr. Xeno was designed as a counterpart to Senku.
