You can grow an agency your way; with quality, humility and passion at its heart. Do great work and let it speak for itself. No hard selling, spamming or soulless promotion. Generate demand and show your stuff with creativity and integrity. Never copy but understand the path the agencies you admire took. Take inspiration, innovate and draw your own map. Your instincts around the frameworks, courses, tricks and hacks is correct. Growing an agency isn't as easy as that. It becomes easier if you do it the hard way. You’re called the founder for a reason. Your hands are on the wheel and your job is the cornerstones. Learn. Change things. Create your next set of problems. Occupy the places where choices are hard and no-one - let alone you - is ever completely satisfied. If you commit to the hard way, anything is possible. The agencies you respect aren't fundamentally different from you. They don't have a secret recipe. They faced everything you are facing and they have just as many headaches now. They just got better at hiding it. The gap between you isn't insurmountable. Big budget high profile work isn't harder to do - it's harder to be trusted to do. Trust takes time. But time is plentiful. You have more than you need if you're patient. Patience means consistently showing up until opportunity arrives. The longer you wait, the bigger it will be. You must also be accountable to using time well. Accountability isn't for beating yourself up. It's noticing everything in your control and committing to improve. This is big growth with a small "g". Consistent and sustainable. Sticking around and avoiding and burnout. The less stoic will give up, and it will be just you left. This isn't a compromise. This is how true growth works. The details will change but reputation and relationships are the bedrocks of every business success story. Build them and you'll be robust enough to ride out the storms. As long as you've got energy there will be a way forward. And then, of course, there's money. Money is an outcome. A must-have vanity metric. It's out there, so go get it, but don’t grab at it and miss the bigger opportunities ahead. The real reward is growing in a way that gives you space to learn, improve and enjoy the ride. It's the potential in what you're creating and the pride in what you've achieved. My agency was more than a job, it shaped my life. Dear Agency Founder exists to share what I found interesting and important. I want to validate that if you're doing it with integrity, you're doing it right. Together we can think big and take the next small step.

Chasing the perfect system can hold you back, especially when you're just starting out. Sometimes you just have to take that messy first step. Action taught me more than any plan ever could. Take one step and see where it leads you.

Agencies have never been a cheap way to get something done. So why are we concerned that AI costs less than us?

Crazy how you’ll adopt a big company HR policy like probation periods without thinking but you’ll reject other useful things big companies do like “business development” Design agencies I love you.

You take up a tiny part of your client's brain even when in a face to face meetings. Have empathy with their world if you want to influence them.

Most client’s don’t have clarity around their problems (and they feel insecure about that). They don’t have things in a shape to come to you with. The person that provides clarity and safety gets the work.

Koan #26 “I’m smart!” “Why?” “I flipped this coin, and it came up heads.” “So?” “I wanted it to be heads.” “Flip it again.” “No, I’m done with that.” “What will you do now?” “Tell other people how to flip coins.” And the student was enlightened.

You will run in this form until you stop being valuable, or until you stop being fulfilled, and then your business will stop. This aspirational final form, which you got to by being really good, is actually going to be the end of you.

But the closer you get to it, you realize the drawback. Same clients, same problems, same value, same budget. No room to improve, and no room to change. ⤵️

Positioning isn’t optional. If you don't create a position for yourself in people's minds, then they will assume one anyway. They’ll ask you to do the things they assume you do. Their positioning for you is what you'll end up doing. Fingers crossed you like what they choose.

To be fair a lot of the people that have had success are selling access to their tactics and promising the world 🧐 🧐 🧐 The hope is it might work for you. What isn’t mentioned is that these things worked because they were layered on top of the size and quality of their network

Every success story is built here. The mistake when looking for direction from more established agencies is to ignore reputation and relationships and look only at the tactics. ⤵️

Reputation and relationships are the most robust assets your business has. The market can’t affect them and they passively generate opportunities. People buy from people they trust. The more they trust them the more the invest. ⤵️
