In our recent field-visit to the Hintereisferner glacier in the Ötztal Alps we collected water samples, LiDAR data, videos, photos from trail-cameras and launched citizen science initiative to engage local community. @freshwaterflows #BISCA @unibirmingham #TheBigThaw

Extremely pleased to share the second chapter of my PhD is now published in #Dendrochronologia doi.org/10.1016/j.dend…. In this study, we aimed to understand how tree growth evolves as a function of elevation in the context of climate change in Turtmann River Basin, Switzerland.

Scientists: climate change decisive in 2023’s deadly lake outburst in Sikkim. A new international study, published 30 Jan in SCIENCE, confirms disaster’s link to dirty energy. The study finds that thawing permafrost due to temperature rise caused a massive moraine collapse into South Lhonak Lake. The collapse released a 20-meter-high ‘tsunami-like’ wave; releasing the equivalent of 20,000 Olympic swimming pools’ worth of water downstream. The flood triggered 45 landslides, damaged the Teesta III dam, and caused severe sediment erosion. Heavy rain worsened the impact. 55 people lost their lives. 70 remain missing. The scientists confirm this lake remains highly vulnerable to future GLOFs. The study’s lead author, Ashim Sattar, from IIT Bhubaneshwar, calls for urgent action, including “early warning systems, strengthened regulatory frameworks, and community education, to mitigate these risks.” ICIMOD cryosphere lead and study co-author Mohd. Farooq Azam “This research paper exemplifies global collaboration among Earth scientists, using cutting-edge satellite imagery and modelling techniques to unravel the complexities of cryospheric hazards.” Climate change is amplifying glacial hazards. We need stronger regional cooperation and urgent action to protect vulnerable mountain communities. Read the full press release here: icimod.org/press-release/… #SikkimGLOF #SikkimFloods
