But that's how tactical nuclear escalation would play out and this has been theorized for years by U.S. military, the DoD, etc. We shoot them down, they're stated known response is to launch a tactical nuclear strike on the base that launched the planes.

If they get shot upon that's an act of war no? So they can defend themselves - go check out some stories from Syria

They'd be defenseless and that'd be the perfect pretext to further escalate the situation. Just can't see NATO members in Western Europe particularly, being okay with this kind of risk.

Unless you have a map of Ukrainian military positions at present, then I'm not sure how we can definitively answer this question? Guessing there prob isn't a significant force near Poland?
