Am I the only naturalist who thinks morels taste like burnt dirt? I've had em probably half a dozen times and they consistently rank at the bottom of all foraged mushrooms. I just don't get it

@chadwaytweety I saw someone call it a "survival mushroom" which I like. Nontoxic like 99% of polypores, and it's not too tough to chew and digest, but insubstantial and probably doesn't taste like anything

@coughdropsh Northern red oak for sure (or anything in the red oak group, my picture might be black oak). Springtime has me thinking about ramps and bloodroot, probably my favorite ephemerals

@TemmieMew @fag_daughter But those sort of have a particular range so it really would depend on the location for me to determine who it is… but this looks very very alike to the fruits of the Fremont cottonwood

@Oroborous2 @mattsutaaki Yeah I'm not gonna mess with those ones. Only found one before and they're pine associates so not common at all in my area. Messed up part is that it's traditionally eaten in Finland, you can buy it canned, and "esculenta" means edible lol

Big honkin gyromitras, "false morels" behind my compost pile. Some folks eat them but they're toxic. (?) This is hotly debated. How anyone could mistake this for a morel is beyond me.

@mattsutaaki @Oroborous2 Boiling like 10-15 minutes with good ventilation, changing out the water and doing it again. Might not even remove it enough I've heard

@geosiphon @Oroborous2 never tried any of them myself, but gyromitrin is removed by par-boiling, isn't it?
