What conditions should a system meet for life to emerge in it? This is the question that we tackled in this Artificial Life journal paper, available at direct.mit.edu/artl/article/2…. I am very proud of this work!👇Below, a walkthrough 🧵over its main aspects: 1/n

@savvyRL Sorry to hear that. Also it seems like this app is totally broken with all these assholes (or single asshole with a network of accounts) suddenly harassing you now, no? I hardly login anymore these days, but it looks like it's getting worse by the day.

Preference models (PMs), used in RLHF and best-of-n, are vulnerable to reward hacking. We show how to combine LM capabilities with human insight to make PMs more interpretable and reliable. A thread about our paper at arxiv.org/abs/2310.13011.

Does anyone has reliable evidence regarding water and food situation in gaza or lack thereof? I am looking for actual evidence of a humanitarian problem: dehydration, sickness from unsafe water, etc. (Please assume that I watch the same news sources you do, and also did a search)

I have the feeling that the toolkit created by my talented colleagues hasn't yet received the attention it deserves, so I'm reintroducing their blog post on disco, designed for controling LLMs and other generative models! europe.naverlabs.com/blog/disco-a-t…

OMFG. Turns out The Day After Tomorrow could possibly be the Year After Next? We're hanging by a thread from full-scale #climate collapse that will be far, far worse than even our direst imaginings. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Take that in. Then try wrapping your head around the fact that we’re only seeing the beginning of a destabilising planet, while remembering that GHG emissions are still rising and the companies largely causing this are making record profits. A bit concerning, don’t you think?
Prof. Eliot Jacobson@EliotJacobson

Our favorite planet has now seen 20 days in a row breaking the modern-day record high-temperature of 16.924°C (62.46°F) set on July 24, 2022. This global heatwave is likely the hottest 20-day stretch in the last 100,000+ years.

1/ Here's a🧵on why the record shattering extremes in Europe are so unsettling for climate scientists. It's increasingly looking that we've underestimated the impacts of #ClimateBreakdown... twitter.com/WxNB_/status/1…
Nahel Belgherze@WxNB_

BREAKING: Rome, Italy just experienced its highest temperature in recorded history with 42.9°C (109.2°F). This beats the previous record from 2022 by 2 full degrees Celsius. That is a huge margin.

Interesting work that uses Neural CAs to study open-ended evolution and complexification by simulating an artificial ecosystem. I think we need ALife as a stepping stone to reach “AGI” (or highly adaptive AI). Artificial Life >> Artificial Intelligence‼️ google-research.github.io/self-organisin…

@sp_monte_carlo @BryanEikema Thanks! I'll have a look. Indeed, the first usage we found of this relaxation was in a MCMC loop (jstor.org/stable/2669846). We think we are the first to use it to actually obtain samples. The crucial thing is to have a good proposal, which for complex spaces was unfeasible...

Unfocused / curious: A few recent theoretical papers have used the attached to approximate exact sampling. It's a bit strange, and seems new (e.g. as far as I can tell, they have not just re-invented importance resampling), but I can't quite put my finger on what it's doing well.

@sp_monte_carlo @BryanEikema I'm also curious about where this screenshot is from? We were also not the first to propose this approximation, and in the paper, we discuss some earlier connections (e.g., in particle filters and in variational inference), but I don't think I've seen this specific one before.

I have often seen statistics like this, and am very much in favour of curbing the high-emitting activities of the rich (and while there are plenty of people richer than I am, I am not excluding myself from the people whose emissions must be curbed). But ... 1/
