Isn't it true that the Taliban and ISIS are known for destroying antiquities and cultural heritage sites? Last night, Israel attacked a 700-year-old Hammam in Gaza, Hamam Al Samra, a symbol of the city's heritage. Why would a 700-year-old building, recently maintained and renovated by international (French) experts, be targeted? It's challenging to understand the logic behind such actions, which seem barbaric. Who are the sons of darkness, and who are the sons of civilization? After 1967, Moche Dayan, the late Israeli Defence Minister, was frequently seen in Gaza taking antiquities. He amassed a large collection, which he gifted to friends in the U.S. I was pleased to see some of these items in Beirut, purchased by Lebanese businessmen and NGOs. Post-1967, Israel demolished parts of the old city of Gaza. While they prohibited building homes outside the old city, they allowed construction within it, on the condition that the Israeli army could take the stones from the demolished houses. You decide for yourself what to understand from all of this.
