6.45 lakh people had TDS deducted on their crypto trades in FY 2022-23. Only 1.39 lakh reported that income in their return. That gap isn't 5 lakh people trying to dodge tax. It's 5 lakh people who made one of a few very common assumptions. TDS getting deducted doesn't mean your tax is settled. It just means the exchange reported the trade under your PAN. You still have to calculate the actual gain and report it under Schedule VDA. Trading only on Binance or Bybit doesn't take you outside Indian tax law either. What matters is your residential status, not where the exchange is based. Swapping one coin for another feels like it shouldn't count since no rupees changed hands. It still counts. A swap is a transfer of a VDA, and any profit on it is taxable. And no, there's no minimum amount below which a trade doesn't need reporting. Every disposal counts, even the small ones. If any of this sounds familiar, you're not in trouble yet. ITR-U lets you fix FY 2021-22 through FY 2024-25 voluntarily, before the department flags it for you.
