I just heard a Goldman Sachs exec say knowledge work is going to zero. and it’s something I’ve been thinking about.. every lawyer, consultant, accountant. they all get paid for the same reason. they know something you don't. that's it. that's the whole business model. AI made knowledge infinite. so what happens when everyone has the same information at their fingertips? what's actually worth paying for anymore?

Increased quantity ≠ preserved employment If AI cuts the cost of producing legal work by 80%, and demand rises 40%, total labor required still falls. This is an elasticity question. If demand is: •Highly elastic (>1) → total spending on the service rises •Inelastic (<1) → total spending falls Most professional services historically are not infinitely elastic. There are only so many lawsuits, audits, or enterprise software builds the market wants. More people might afford a lawyer. But that doesn’t automatically mean the same number of lawyers are needed.

@mattshumer_ I agree mostly but you’re missing some basic economics: There will be more demand for financial analysis, software development, and legal services as they become cheaper to produce - not less. Enormous consumer surplus = the future is brighter than you portray

@tomkeene Millennials and Gen Z are more likely than prior cohorts to stack flexible jobs and report side work. Growth is concentrated in full-time + part-time or two part-time roles, not multiple full-time jobs. Multiple jobholding as a share of employed workers remains within its historical range and is not unusually high.
Barchart@Barchart

9.3 Million Americans work multiple jobs to make ends meet 🚨 This is the highest number ever recorded ✅ In percentage terms, 5.7% of employed Americans worked multiple jobs last month, the most this century 🤯

@adamhfry @bengoodger Once you get a dozen or so prompts in a session on Atlas, it starts to slow down, and it crawls, then hangs, then reload. It loses its ability to ‘see’ on the reload- no previously visible elements unless the DOM is still intact = no deep workflows.

The stock market's gains are being overwhelmingly driven by seven Big Tech companies who have invested heavily in AI, which has made tech oligarchs even wealthier. But when that AI bubble bursts, the rest of us will be stuck holding the bag. Be warned.
