I genuinely can’t remember a legendary player suffering a more damaging final chapter than Lionel Messi. In the space of one month, the image of one of the untouchable football icon has been replaced fairly or unfairly by endless accusations of favouritism, controversy and achievements gained through questionable circumstances. Now, whenever his name comes up, people don’t immediately discuss the brilliance. They mention referees, protection, scandals and former opponents publicly questioning what happened around him. That is the truly tragic ending. Not missing one final chance after a glorious career but reaching the end and watching millions of people dispute the legitimacy of half your legacy. Imagine building an immortal career, only for your farewell to become a public trial where every trophy is reopened as evidence. That is not simply defeat. That is reputational collapse.

There is a weird propaganda of hate against Messi. It’s something unlike anything I’ve ever seen in sports. Messi’s character as an athlete and as a faithful husband and father is almost as well-known as his status as the greatest football player of all time. And yet people have oddly chosen to hate him because of weird propaganda on social media.
