A sheriff's lieutenant kept secret journals documenting corruption before his death. His daughter found them at the bottom of a gun safe. J.C. Hallman has the story. oklahomawatch.org/2026/04/27/don…

Also, make sure you're up to speed this week with today's #MondayMinute newsletter: mailchi.mp/nondoc/monday-… It contains links to articles, key calendar items and an important interview with a former U.S. senator that I'd reckon every American ought to watch.

As lawmakers eye a potentially early end to the 2026 #okleg session, landmark literacy legislation has already passed into law, but a litany of other #education proposals await their fates. @KevReports offers an #oklaed overview of where things stand. nondoc.com/2026/04/27/lit…

Warren Buffett, in his first sit-down since stepping down as Berkshire CEO, gave the cleanest indictment of legalized gambling in a decade. He called it a tax cut for the wealthy. The math proves him exactly right. Americans wagered $165 billion at legal sportsbooks in 2025. They lost $16 billion of that. FanDuel pulled $6 billion of the losses. DraftKings pulled $5.3 billion. Every state with legal mobile sports betting collected a tax on the bettor side. New York alone took in over $1.2 billion in 2025 sports betting tax revenue. Layer the lottery on top. State lotteries generate over $90 billion a year. The bottom half of income earners account for roughly 70% of total spend. The average lottery player makes $38,000. A household earning $20,000 spends three times more on tickets than one earning $30,000. The implicit tax rate, meaning whatever the state keeps after prizes, runs 30 to 50% depending on the game. No other revenue source in America has that base and that rate. The structural design is the engine. A single straight sports bet carries a hold of 4 to 5%. A four-leg parlay carries a hold above 30%. FanDuel and DraftKings spent five years rebuilding their apps to make parlays the default product. FanDuel's blended hold rate hit 11.4% in 2025, up from roughly 7% in 2022. The product got worse for the customer and the customer wagered more anyway. Now look at the substitution. Nine US states have no state income tax. Seven of those nine run state lotteries. Seven of those nine have legalized sports betting. The states most committed to never taxing wealth are the same states running the largest extraction machines on people who cannot afford to lose. Read it as policy. Here is what Buffett is actually pointing at. The state needs revenue. It can raise income tax on the top decile, or it can run a lottery plus a sports betting tax. The second option raises the money from the people who can least afford it. The first option becomes politically optional. New York's $1.2 billion in 2025 sports betting tax is $1.2 billion the state did not have to ask of someone earning $5 million. DraftKings and FanDuel sell a privatized collection mechanism for a regressive tax that the state never has to defend at the ballot box again. Voters approve legalization once. Collection runs forever. The state takes a cut. The wealthy get a quieter top bracket. The bettor's cut shrinks every quarter as the parlay menu gets pushed harder. The function of a government, Buffett said, is not to play its people for suckers. Thirty-nine state governments now do.

Kennedy told Congress that hospitals are mistreating children who get measles because of a "bias toward a vaccination-only policy" and that other treatments exist that American hospitals refuse to use. Dr. Peter Hotez holds an MD, a PhD, and a doctorate of science. He has spent decades studying vaccine-preventable diseases. His response to Kennedy's claim was direct: "This is a lie." The medical reality Kennedy is obscuring: once measles causes viremia - meaning the virus has entered the bloodstream and is circulating - there is no antiviral treatment. The standard of care is supportive: fluids, fever management, vitamin A supplementation in deficient populations, and treating complications. That is not a policy preference or a bias. It is the current state of medical knowledge. The treatments Kennedy is gesturing at that "other countries use" are not established alternatives being suppressed by American hospitals. They are unproven protocols that antivaccine networks have been promoting. No peer-reviewed evidence base exists supporting them as effective measles treatments. The U.S. is currently experiencing more than 1,700 measles cases this year, part of a multi-year surge. Kennedy spent five days of congressional testimony arguing that declining vaccination rates were not his responsibility while proposing to delay hepatitis B vaccination and remove other vaccines from routine schedules. Hotez's closing line is not rhetoric. It is a clinical and epidemiological assessment from a physician who studies exactly this: antivaccine activism is a direct causal factor in child deaths from preventable diseases. The Secretary of Health and Human Services is now testifying before Congress in ways that advance that activism, not counter it.
Prof Peter Hotez MD PhD DSc(hon)@PeterHotez

This is a lie. Measles has a well established mortality and morbidity rate among unvaccinated children. Once measles enters the bloodstream and causes viremia there’s not much to be done other than supportive measures. It’s the antivaccine activists killing America’s children

Wealthy districts can usually fund schools with their property taxes. Poorer districts w/lower property values can't, so they rely partly on state $ to make up the difference. But voucher $ depletes these state funds and gives $ mostly to students already in private schools.
The Tennessee Holler@TheTNHoller

Overheard In Williamson County, TN’s richest:⚾️dad says their private school tells everyone to get a ($7000) voucher. (can’t raise tuition til enough do) Ed expert: “Negligent for them not to. Some make parents get vouchers b4 schools kick in💰aid. Legislature incentivized this”

Buried at the bottom of the trash heap that is the news... Donald Trump's EPA greenlit more toxic coal ash dumping, removing Obama and Biden-era protections. You know... The stuff that's full of arsenic, lead, and mercury that poisons water and causes cancers and other illnesses in low-income communities. We should be talking about that more.

When DOGE started cutting National Weather Service staff, there were also cuts in the number of daily balloon launches to gather weather data. The graphic on the left is what went up today at 8 am EDT (1200z). The graphic on the right is from May 2, 2023.

I wrote about this in my newsletter. The Weather Service didn't launch balloons recently and got surprised by tornadoes in Kansas. DOGE cuts at NWS cut out weather balloon launches which gather data for storm prediction. You are less safe because of that choice.

My jaw dropped reading this 10th Circuit decision about a man twice deported from #Oklahoma despite being "kidnapped," abused and beaten by a woman who trafficked him here from Mexico at age 16. To my peers: This major story should have legs & questions. nondoc.com/2026/04/23/10t…
