I always appreciate opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. Bringing together school counseling & social work students created meaningful dialogue about our roles & how we can work together in service. Collaboration strengthens our professions. ♥️ #schoolcounseling

This month’s ASCA National Model training was especially exciting! 🎉 We learned that Jamie Zuel was recently named the ND School Counselor of the Year! 👏🏽 It’s always inspiring to be in spaces with counselors who are making such a powerful impact! #scchat #schoolcounseling

@RutgersAltRoute A5: Modeling gentle communication, celebrating small acts of empathy, and creating routines where students can uplift one another. Beyond the classroom, I extend this culture through family communication and community activities that reinforce respect and compassion.

For our final question, be specific, as your practices can give other educators ideas to consider. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools Q5: Kindness can be an antidote to bullying, it builds empathy and creates positive environments. Share how you spread kindness in or beyond the classroom.

@RutgersAltRoute I spread kindness by acknowledging all my students and always being mindful of their wanted pronouns. I made sure to memorize all 100+ names and small details about them such as funny things they like to say. It is important that they all know they are valued. #TeacherEd

@RutgersAltRoute I spread kindness with morning check-ins, shout-outs for positive behavior, peer compliments, and class service projects. Celebrating small wins and modeling respect helps build a caring school community. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

@RutgersAltRoute A5 Little things matter. Students notice the small compliments you give them. A cool new haircut, a great doodle in their notebooks (even if they’re not supposed to doodle), or just a “You did great in class today!” means the world. They’re kids! They remember the small things.

@RutgersAltRoute A5: Modeling is a impactful technique! Students learn from what we say and do. They also watch how we engage with each other.

@RutgersAltRoute A4 #TeacherEd #SafeSchools I would encourage and teach empathy, practice safe upstander scripts, role‑play responses, recognize and celebrate upstanding, and ensure adults respond promptly so students can trust and know that speaking up helps.

Every year, bullying impacts countless young lives, but silence helps it grow. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools Question 4: How can we encourage and empower students to move from being bystanders to upstanders in the effort to curtail bullying and promote safe schools?

@RutgersAltRoute A4: Teaching students social awareness and relationship skills goes a long way in promoting upstander behavior. Additionally, sharing this information with caregivers is important so they can reinforce these skills.

@tristandl1992 @RutgersAltRoute I have also found it helpful to explain the difference between bullying and peer conflict. While both need to be addressed, students (and parents) need to understand the differences.

@RutgersAltRoute I have found that a serious, formal reminder to an entire class when bullying is witnessed can really impact the students' views on what has occurred. Going over the definitions of bullying and the severe consequences remind students of its impact.

A student’s role in bullying can vary. They can bully, be bullied, or witness bullying. Think about the social and emotional needs of those involved. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools Q3: What are effective ways for adults to respond or resources to share when students seek their support?

@RutgersAltRoute A3: I “disrupt” the situation. Remove students from the event and have heart-felt, separate conversations with both perpetrator and target. Also document and report. Directing students to counselors or trained in-house resources to talk things through also helps. #SafeSchools

@RutgersAltRoute Q3: The implementation of social and emotional learning (SEL) has been linked to improvements in students’ social, emotional, and academic performance. There are also connections to lower juvenile delinquency rates.
