I clearly need to re-evaluate my research agenda---evidently I'm not maximizing the fun I could be having

@dfaranha @BootleJonathan @kennyog We’ve exchanged a handful of emails and our work is getting a little bit of cross citation from the ML people who think about Stego, but virtually nothing with the mainline Stego people. We are trying to improve the way we cite them as a starting point.

I have a deep fascination about how the chaos-based image encryption literature forks reality. I accepted to review a paper on the subject, and wow, it's wild.

Please ignore this nice picture of a building. Nothing to see here. Just some research happening. Carry on.

@gkaptchuk I understand how annoying it is and I had enough similar experiences in the past. But there were a lot of crypto submissions this cycle. I guess the only solution is to follow the advice of the Dalai Lama and be the reviewer you want to see in the world.

Updated state of peer review in crypto: a USENIX reviewer who didn’t know what a hybrid was in the context of a cryptographic proof. Gd help us all (or at least those of us who are pre-tenure)

@wangxiao1254 Should have said — this was a “highly confident” review. I also heard of this happening and experienced it in some of by assigned reviews. I appreciated that folks largely deferred from what I saw. The cascade of papers has me worried about the next few years.

I feel I learnt a lot from @gkaptchuk article on writing (systems/security) papers and the reasons why many papers get rejected. Hopefully, these thoughts will guide my next paper 🙂. cs-people.bu.edu/kaptchuk/blog/…

In bullet point form: - make sure your writing choices dont make the paper harder to review - you gotta pick the right evaluation metrics (and justify the choice) - rebuttals are pretty broken in their current state

So I made the mistake of joining too many PCs at once... I decided to channel the resulting angst into a blog post about common mistakes I saw that sank papers. It's aimed at students writing their first papers, but hopefully valuable to all! kaptchuk.com/blog/post/revi…

I'm excited to (belatedly) announce that I will be joining @Cornell_CS as an assistant prof in Fall 2024! I'll be hiring students this cycle -- if you or anyone you know is interested a PhD in cryptography, quantum computing, or probabilistic proof systems, please get in touch :)
