@MattSakR2NG You think it means anything that it says boom twice? Maybe 2 commitments

@TJWalkerRadio Does it make a difference in your mind that the 33 million isn’t due upfront but for the length of the contract?

Saturday Thoughts on John Calipari/Kentucky basketball:
We're in this mess because of Mitch Barnhart making yet another terrible decision. He's made the worst hires in the history of multiple programs but the contract stuff with Cal is as bad as it gets. The only reason this is complicated and messy situation is because of the Lifetime Contract. Barnhart was played by Cal's agent and bad decisions will have bad consequences. Otherwise this wouldn't be difficult.
But because $33 million is a lot of money.. things are complicated. Here are the options:
- You fire Cal, pay him what he's owed. This would send a powerful message about what UK is willing to tolerate from a results standpoint and the program does a total fresh reset.
My opinion- If UK does this it will be chaos. The coaching search will be madness. As hectic as things would be in the intermediate it is the option that allows for the smoothest seas come November and December regardless of the new coach. There could be a 2009-2010 feel if the team is fun. A reunited UK fan base would be a good thing.
- Cal leaves for another job. Plenty of good jobs available, allows Cal to hit reset and he doesn't have "fired from UK" attached to him, which I'm sure he cares about.
My opinion- At the surface this seems like an easy out for Cal, but he'd have to live with knowing he was ran out of Lexington because he made all sorts of terrible history the last several seasons. Cal wants to go out the right way, being fired or taking another job isn't what he'd consider "right". I don't doubt if he were fired he'd get another job, but does he strike first? I don't think so, but your guess >/= mine.
-Calipari returns for the 2024-2025 season. Maybe the money is too much? Between the buyout and what you'd have to pay the next guy... it's a TON of money. So, Mitch decides Cal gets one more season to end things on a better note.
My opinion- This can only be sold if Reed comes back. If it's another total rebuild (without Reed and pretty much everyone else) I don't see how you can do this again. The fan base will be ugly. The players will hear it. If the team was good, most folks (but not all) would eventually buy in because all we care about is winning, but all the pressure would be on March, again.
If you were able to get several surprise returnees, including Reed, I can get onboard with one final season. Put together an insane roster, we'd all have our doubts about Cal being able to do anything with it, but one more year of Reed, one more year of Cal, and we all know for better or for worse everyone moves on after 2025. I don't think Cal has what it takes to win a title, but I'd roll the dice one more time in this scenario and hope I'm wrong.
As for what I think happens.. I truly have no clue because I'm not sure if Barnhart even knows what he wants to do. I have next-to-no confidence that whatever Barnhart decides will be the right choice, I can't stress enough that we're in this mess because of him.
Folks will say "actually it's because Cal stinks we're in this mess." Cal has STUNK, but it should be easy to fire a coach that's won one tournament game since the pandemic. This isn't easy because of Barnhart's decision making, which is ironic because now he has to make another decision.
If Cal can convince some of these guys to return, if I were Barnhart I'd let it ride one more time.
But if everyone leaves and next year's roster is going to be all freshmen and some new portal Cats... it's time to start over at the top, too.

@TristanUda Everyone keeps saying that but we can’t fire him with how high his buyout is.
