Finally got around to my list of the best documentaries of 2023 (+ some fun extras). Films from USA, Canada, France, Brazil, Tunisia and even Greenland. A remarkably strong year for films about First Nations people, too. And a lil somebody called Beyonce. thefilmexperience.net/blog/2024/4/1/…

@DaSpaceWitch @KailSovl It lost to the film with the best direction, best screenplay, best casting, best editing and best supporting actor. Agree or disagree with the wins/losses, but it’s silly to equate Sinners’ wins with something that “doesn’t make sense” when the stats back up OBAA even more.

@KailSovl Not only best cinematography but best score, best screenplay, and best actor. Like that literally is what the movie is. So how do they not win best picture?

@glenndunks Jamie Lee was very good in The Last Showgirl but her performance here is completely misjudged. Perhaps because she is executive producer no-one had the guts to tell her to tone it down.

Scarpetta is pretty dodgy. Rosy McEwen gives by far the best performance as the young Kay Scarpetta. Nicole Kidman adequate. Jamie Lee Curtis is so OTT it is painful.

@kittenaround_51 @mcucolo57 If daughter has the means to do it, I say she should. Mom is going to leave this earth probably before daughter. Then, there’s nothing more to make mom happy. If daughter ‘goes first’, mom will remember what she was willing & able to do for her. IMHO.🙏🏼

A young lady going to college for her PHD in bio medical engineering calls in on a talk show to ask about buying a house for her family because she has the means. Her mom wants a nicer house because her uncle has one and told her daughter that she should get them a bigger home. Do you think that is the proper thing to ask of your child and/or is their responsibility to do so?

@DeusExCinema I found it so weird they use Randy Newman’s win to highlight her continued loss and it’s like damn he was the previous all-time loser and he’s catching strays.

One of many fascinating things revealed in the surprisingly engaging Diane Warren documentary is that she’s kinda lost it, the magic in her music just isn’t there any more. But she’s such a loveable oddball she deserves her annual nom for as long as she wants it.

So Sinners had the best screenplay, the best actor, best score and best cinematography but still lost best picture. Does that make any sense? #Oscars

The most important Oscar speech tonight wasn’t about film. The director of “Mr. Nobody Against Putin” just said this from the stage: “You lose your country through countless small acts of complicity. When we act complicit when a government murders people on the streets. When oligarchs take over the media and control how we produce and consume it. We all face a moral choice. But even a nobody is more powerful than you think.” He was talking about Russia. The audience knew he was talking about America too. Elon Musk owns the platform you’re reading this on. David Ellison is buying CNN — Pete Hegseth said it will be “far better” when he does. The DOGE deposition videos were removed from YouTube. The Epstein files are sealed. The Pentagon won’t release a casualty count. Countless small acts of complicity. That’s how you lose it. A nobody is more powerful than you think. Never stop connecting the dots.

@HertzBarry They’re hoping it had amassed a following and so will do better. Random horrors used to get sequels all the time. Makes sense that there is one even if the first wasn’t the greatest.

Always happy for Samara Weaving and David Cronenberg to get work, but has the demand for a READY OR NOT sequel been percolating so strongly for the past seven years?

@TheFilmScorer I guarantee you ask most ordinary people who saw it “did you know they used a previously published piece of music?” most would have no idea what you’re talking about. Maybe a composer should know? But still, I don’t think it’s too wild. Now, voting for a lead in supporting…

@glenndunks I do assume that that’s the case for most people - even if say you saw arrival in theaters, would you even realize it was the same piece of music eight years later? Would guess not

@COREYHAIMz Have her son get killed (maybe he’s the stagerigger and he gets an actual chase scene while she’s still stuck up there on the wires) and Sidney has to comfort her while she mourns. Character development! Ghostface killed her family and Ghostface has been her family. It’d all work

@sacha_coward I watched season 1 of Dr Quinn Medicine Woman a few years ago out of curiosity and in it she supported Native Americans, was extremely pro-vax and anti-racism and advocated for women and I was like, I thought it was some Republican-coded show for patriots. TV was wild.

I've been comfort watching 90s ER on Netflix. A30 year-old show: Trans character with sympathetic backstory. Multiple gay characters. HIV discussed every episode. Main characters who are black and brown talking about systemic racism Years before we all came anti 'woke' babies.
