I see this sentiment that "The Odyssey isn't woke" popping up from the right. This is cope. The Odyssey is fully woke. A trans-man is jumping around in armor. Helen of Troy didn't get less black. The Left won. It's a stomping. It happens. The Left wins some, the Right wins some. It's culture wars and Nolan is the white George Floyd Revenge Goliath that choked out the backlash. Admit defeat on this one. The Right knocked down Little Mermaid, Moana, Snow White, The Marvels, but the Left won with The Odyssey. The score is 4-1.

The Odyssey isn’t woke; Chris Nolan is just continuing the pre-Obama idea of being race-blind and focusing on acting ability. Right-wing influencers are the ones infected with the woke-mind virus; they see it behind every bush and get triggered. In reality Nolan is just someone from twenty years ago trying to make a good film.

Turn went private so I can't quote this but it's 100% true, avid TV-show watchers & especially millennials are so story/plot-focused that they've become blind to what actually makes cinema special & unique, and it's why they tend to underrate a lot of New Hollywood era films

@JoseMLuna Given Nolan was not afraid of casting against type, I thought a Shohreh Aghdashloo or Hiam Abbass would have worked well. Or if she needed to be a nymph-type, maybe Juno Temple even. Theron is fine but doesn’t really lend the character gravitas beyond what would be expected.

So... New York (rightly!) expanded the definition of what counts as rape. More survivors (thankfully!) came forward. As a result, official rates of rape increased. So Mamdani was... right and everyone is just yelling about this in bad faith?

@okitsRGS You go to movies to be j Immersed. Doing giant black bars on the side will ruin immersion. There's optimal viewing distances for TV's, same with projections. And if it's too small it ruins immersion. You're not missing story by not seeing the edge. You're missing immersion.

@pittworldwide I’d also note that music criticism has caught up to this genre in a way that allows for such (near) universal acclaim and attention. The likes of Swift and Rodrigo and Eilish mean you can’t just swipe away female artists in even the more ‘reputable’ outlets. dance music as well.

@rockmarooned Would prefer he shoots it that way for IMAX and then edits it for other formats rather shoot in 2.35:1 and nobody gets to experience it in any other way. It’s a speciality and people will be paying extra for it.

I think there’s something to be said about actors that look like real people as well everything that goes into the character. Sam Neill was in his mid-40s, looked like he had lived a life and was dressed ordinarily. He nor Dern or anyone else had unnatural covert CIA abilities.
