The worst part about the state of Georgia basketball is that the root of all of these losses are issues that have been issues throughout Mike’s tenure. Inability to rebound at a high enough level, bad half court offense, poor rotations on defense, and lack of overall awareness by the players. It’s why we see the extended runs other teams are able to go on, the extensive cold streaks where we either blow big leads or fall completely out of close games, and the boneheaded mistakes like Smurf shooting a layup down 3 with a second to go or fouling the Auburn shooter up 4 with a second to go. Some of these are problems that can take a couple of years to correct, some can be chalked up to roster deficiencies, but none of these are things that should be this prevalent under a fourth year coach with a roster this talented. Uncorrected issues like this can be covered up by a good shooting night or overwhelming a less talented team, but they aren’t sustainable in conference and especially tournament play. It’s why I get so irritated when some of our fans tell me to sit back and be happy we’re not in the Crean days. Mike’s shortcomings aren’t as massive as Crean’s, but they’re shortcomings that hinder the progression of the program, and have put a firm ceiling on this program for as long as he’s on the sideline.
