Court fixes date for suit seeking new probe into Mohbad death
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday fixed May 28 for hearing in a suit seeking to compel the Nigeria Police Force to reopen an investigation into the death of late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. Justice James Omotosho fixed the date after the applicant informed the court that all the respondents had been served with the processes in the suit. The respondents in the matter are the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command. The suit was instituted by a non-governmental organisation, the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation.
The group is seeking an order of mandamus compelling the police authorities to conduct what it described as a thorough, diligent and impartial reinvestigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death in September 2023. At the resumed proceedings on Monday, counsel for the applicant, Tunde Falola, told the court that all the respondents in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/636/2026 had been duly served.
Following the submission, Justice Omotosho adjourned the matter till May 28 for hearing. The court had earlier granted the organisation leave to apply for an order compelling the police to perform their statutory duties under Section 4 of the Police Act 2020.
Part of the relief sought by the applicant is “an Order of Mandamus compelling the respondents to perform their statutory duties as provided for under Section 4 of the Police Act 2020, by inviting all persons who were last seen with the deceased—particularly his wife, one Omowumi Cynthia Aloba; close associates; and the deceased’s father, one Joseph Aloba of Ikorodu area, Lagos—who hurriedly buried the deceased without police clearance first obtained.
” The applicant further prayed the court to compel the police to arrest and prosecute any person found directly or indirectly responsible for the singer’s death where evidence establishes culpability. In an earlier ruling delivered on April 15, Justice Omotosho granted the applicant leave to commence the action, and also approved substituted service on the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.
The judge directed that the court processes be served by dropping copies at the Legal Department of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Area 11, Garki, Abuja. Mohbad’s death in September 2023 triggered nationwide outrage and protests, with many Nigerians alleging foul play.
The incident also gave rise to the #Justice4Mohbad campaign within and outside the country, amid public criticism over the handling of the investigation by security agencies. Nearly three years after the singer’s death, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unresolved.

NDLEA raids BUK area, arrests six over illicit drug activities
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Kano Strategic Command, has raided the Bayero University Kano old site area and arrested six suspects allegedly involved in illicit drug activities. The operation also led to the dismantling of several drug joints within and around the area. The raid followed growing concerns over the use of areas surrounding tertiary institutions for drug trafficking and substance abuse, a trend security agencies say poses threats to students, staff and nearby communities.
Confirming the operation through an official release on Monday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Strategic Command, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics, Sadiq Maigatari, indicated the exercise was carried out under the leadership of the Commander, CN DY Lawal. “The NDLEA Kano Strategic Command under the leadership of CN DY Lawal has conducted a successful raid of the Bayero University Kano old site area, arresting six trespassers involved in illicit drug activities and dismantling several drug joints,” the statement read.
The raid was launched following a formal complaint from the university management over the activities of suspected drug dealers and users operating within parts of the institution and adjoining communities.
“Acting on a formal complaint from the management of Bayero University, the command moved swiftly under ‘Operation Sharar Mafaka’ to dislodge individuals who had been using parts of the university precincts and adjacent areas for the trading and consumption of illicit substances,” he outlined.
From him, six suspects were apprehended during the operation, while items linked to the illegal activities were seized and destroyed. “This action demonstrates our commitment to ensuring a drug-free environment where students, staff and their families can live and work in safety. We will never relent. We will continue to dislodge and occupy all drug joints under Operation Sharar Mafaka,”.
That the operation highlighted the importance of collaboration between the NDLEA and educational institutions in combating drug abuse and related crimes. It also commended the management of Bayero University for promptly reporting the situation and cooperating with security agencies.
The agency warned individuals against using government institutions or educational facilities as centres for drug trading or consumption, stressing that such activities would not be tolerated. It further urged members of the public and institutions to continue reporting suspicious activities to enable security agencies identify and dismantle drug hideouts across the state.

Spain to deploy over 13,000 officers for Pope’s June visit
Spain will deploy more than 13,000 police officers to stave off “multiple” potential threats to Pope Leo XIV’s visit from June 6 to 12, the interior minister indicated on Monday. The pope is due to draw huge crowds in the historically deeply Catholic nation when he travels to Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska addressed reporters in Madrid, including AFP, that the highest level of a special security plan would be activated throughout the visit, the first by a pope to Spain since 2011.
More than 11,000 police officers and 2,200 Civil Guards would be deployed, while the contribution of additional local forces in the northeastern region of Catalonia that includes Barcelona was to be established.
Marlaska reeled off a list of “multiple” potential threats, including terrorism, “but also radicalism, other movements such as social movements, which may naturally seize the opportunity to make themselves heard”.
After staying in the capital, Leo will inaugurate the newest and tallest tower of Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia Basilica, 100 years since the death of its Catalan architect Gaudi “venerable” in 2025 — the first step on the path to sainthood. The American pope will then travel to the Canary Islands, an archipelago off the northwestern coast of Africa that is a major route for Europe-bound migrants.
Leo is a vocal defender of migrants, an issue which was also dear to his predecessor Pope Francis. The fact that the visit “takes place in different territories obviously creates greater complexity for ensuring that it unfolds normally”, as all locations are “very different”, Marlaska indicated.
Simultaneous major events, such as a series of concerts in Madrid by Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny, “do not make it easy”, but Spain “has the resources” to secure all the sites, Marlaska showed. AFP

The world happened to me, Davido decries fuel crisis
Grammy-nominated singer Davido has apologised to fans after failing to appear at a scheduled performance in Lagos, blaming the development on difficulties in sourcing aviation fuel. The artiste, whose real name is David Adeleke, was billed to headline a performance alongside Zlatan Ibile at a popular club, Secret Place, in Ikate Elegushi on Sunday as part of its fifth anniversary celebration.
Also, Davido did not show up, prompting reactions from fans who had gathered for the event. In a post shared afterwards on his Instagram story on Monday, logistical challenges linked to fuel shortages disrupted his travel plans, forcing a reschedule. “The world happened to me yesterday. These wars around the world have really started penetrating. Finding fuel was a problem yesterday to even fly.
Everything had to be rescheduled,” he indicated. He apologised to fans who turned up for the show, assuring them that he would make it up to them. “To my fans that pulled up… sorry I missed it. We’re going to run it back again soon,”.
The development comes amid wider global concerns over fuel supply disruptions, particularly affecting the aviation sector, with rising costs and shortages impacting flight schedules in several regions. Protest rocks Federal High Court over deregistration of opposition parties
Some of the protesters marching from the National Assembly to the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday. Tension flared on Monday at the Federal High Court as scores of demonstrators staged a protest, warning President Bola Tinubu against alleged interference in the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission. The protesters, under the aegis of Concerned Northern Nigeria Stakeholders, marched to the entrance of the court premises in Wuse, Abuja, chanting solidarity songs and waving placards with inscriptions such as “No Opposition, No Election,” “Tinubu, Let Our Democracy Breathe,” and “AGF Must Be Neutral.
” Security operatives, including officers of the Department of State Services, barricaded the entrance and prevented the demonstrators from gaining access to the court complex. Addressing journalists, the leader of the group, Banki Sharrif, raised alarm over what he described as growing threats to judicial independence and democratic institutions, accusing the Nigerian government of undermining due process. He showed, “We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately cease all forms of interference, overt or covert, with the judiciary. Courts must never be reduced to instruments of political engineering. The moment justice is manipulated, the nation itself is placed on trial. “A government that seeks to weaken opposition betrays a lack of confidence in its own legitimacy. Democracy thrives on competition.
Suppressing it is not strength; it is fear. “Elections without credible opposition are nothing more than staged exercises. Democracy demands fairness, openness, and equal opportunity for all political actors. ” The demonstrators warned that democracy cannot function under “intimidation, coercion, or calculated manipulation,” insisting that civic space and opposition remain central to a functioning republic. They further argued that attempts to weaken opposition parties reflect “a lack of confidence” in governance, reiterating that “democracy thrives on competition. ” On the role of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, Sharrif stressed the need for neutrality, cautioning against the politicisation of the office.
“The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation must remain firmly anchored in neutrality and the rule of law. It must not be weaponised for political ends. “Again, we are alarmed by moves suggesting the use of technicalities and administrative manoeuvring to weaken or delist political parties, particularly those with strong roots in Northern Nigeria. “If the courts lend legitimacy to such actions without strict adherence to due process and substantive justice, it will be seen as judicial endorsement of political exclusion. That path is dangerous, risks disenfranchisement, deepens division, and could trigger widespread unrest,” Sharrif warned.
The protesters also warned that public trust in the courts could erode if the judiciary is perceived as an extension of the executive. “Where the judiciary is perceived as an extension of the Executive, citizens inevitably lose faith in lawful remedies. When courts fail, the streets become the courtroom. No nation survives such a breakdown without serious consequences. “We are closely monitoring every action of this administration and every pronouncement of the courts. ” Monday’s protest comes amid heightened political tension over a suit backed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, seeking the deregistration of several political parties.
In court filings before the Federal High Court, the AGF supported a case instituted by some former lawmakers asking the court to compel INEC to deregister the African Democratic Congress and four others. He argued that the continued existence of the affected parties violates provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and undermines electoral integrity, adding that the electoral body would be acting in breach of its constitutional duties if it retains parties that allegedly fail to meet legal requirements.
Other parties listed in the suit include the Action Peoples Party, Action Alliance, Accord Party, and the Zenith Labour Party. The AGF, in an affidavit filed through a legal team led by Prof. Joshua Olatoke (SAN), maintained that as the chief law officer of the federation, he is duty-bound to uphold the Constitution and ensure compliance with the Electoral Act and other laws regulating political parties. Meta has come under fire after ending its contract with Kenyan firm Sama, resulting in 1,108 workers losing their jobs.
The move came shortly after workers revealed they were forced to watch graphic content captured by Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses — including people having sex, using the toilet, and naked bodies — while training the company’s AI.
Meta says it ended the contract because Sama failed to meet its standards. Sama strongly rejects this, insisting it met all requirements.
The revelations have triggered investigations by data protection regulators in Kenya and the UK over privacy concerns.
The workers were labelling content to improve Meta’s AI glasses, which can record video and interact with what users see.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has showed the attainment of international status by the Victor Attah International Airport will improve regional connectivity and eliminate the stress of travelling outside Nigeria to access other countries within the West African sub-region. Eno outlined this while addressing journalists on Sunday after returning from the airport’s maiden international flight to Ghana. The development marks a major milestone for the state-owned aviation facility, which recently secured approval from the Federal Government to commence international operations after years of infrastructure expansion and regulatory processes. The Victor Attah International Airport, located in Uyo, was established during the administration of former Governor Victor Attah and has since undergone successive upgrades under different administrations, including the launch of Ibom Air in 2019.
Speaking on the significance of the international certification, Eno indicated the achievement would benefit not only Akwa Ibom State but also Nigeria and countries within the Gulf of Guinea region. “We cannot succeed in tourism if we don’t have a functional airport, whether internationally or locally. Now, we have gone international, and through Akwa Ibom, we can travel to other countries in the sub-region without having to go out of Nigeria to overfly Nigeria to get to countries in the sub-region, as obtained before. That is one of the things the international flight has stopped immediately,”. that Akwa Ibom was positioning itself as a destination for global conferences and tourism. “Akwa Ibom will become another Kigali, with the international conference centre that is the best in the country yet; people will begin to have international conferences in Uyo,”. Eno expressed optimism that the economic benefits for the Gulf of Guinea region would be enormous, adding that the state was also planning to establish a cargo terminal and trading route to enhance economic activities.
The creation of a Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development and appointed the Managing Director of the Ibom Airport Development Company Limited, Engr Uwem Ekanem, to oversee the ministry pending the appointment of a substantive commissioner. “I have directed the creation of the Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development, and Engr Uwem Ekanem will oversee the affairs of the ministry pending the appointment of a substantive Commissioner,” the governor indicated.
Eno also appreciated President Bola Tinubu for approving the airport’s designation as an international facility and praised the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for coordinating aviation stakeholders and ensuring regulatory compliance leading to the successful commencement of international operations. Tracing the evolution of the airport, the governor paid tribute to former governors Victor Attah, Godswill Akpabio and Udom Emmanuel for their contributions to the development of the aviation infrastructure. He described leadership as a relay race in which successive administrations build on the achievements of.
That Ibom Air would expand its fleet to 10 aircraft with the expected arrival of an additional Airbus in June. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to training indigenous aviation professionals, including pilots, engineers and airport personnel. From him, the state has sponsored the training of 20 pilots in Paris, including the co-pilot on the return flight from Accra, while 20 engineers are currently working at the airport. another 10 cadet pilots are undergoing training in Ethiopia, while three pilots and one engineer are enrolled at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria.
Beyond pilots and engineers, Eno showed the state also planned to train personnel in airport handling, facility management and maintenance operations. The governor indicated that no fewer than 10 major projects were ongoing within the aviation ecosystem, including the construction of a second runway, apron expansion, aviation village, perimeter fencing, hospital and modern surveillance systems. He clarified that the maiden international flight was not merely ceremonial but served as the validation and activation of the airport’s international certification, noting that scheduled international operations would begin after the completion of all regulatory procedures.
Speaking on the sustainability of Ibom Air, Eno showed the state government was considering diversification strategies, disclosing plans to list the airline on the Nigerian Exchange in the future as part of moves towards privatisation. He thanked stakeholders across the executive, legislative and judicial arms of government, as well as members of the aviation community, describing the achievement as a collective accomplishment and a major turning point in the state’s history.

Obi, Kwankwaso unserious, seeking free platform — APC spokesman
The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Felix Morka, has described opposition leaders Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and others as “unserious” over what he called their frequent changes of political parties. Morka made the remarks on Monday while appearing as a guest on The Morning Brief on Channels Television. He was reacting to the reported defection of Obi and Kwankwaso from the African Democratic Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress on Sunday.
Both 2023 presidential candidates cited multiple litigations within the ADC and a toxic political climate, which they accused the ruling party of inciting, as the main reasons for leaving the party they had joined just earlier this year. also., insisting that the APC was not responsible for the crisis in opposition parties. He argued that Obi and Kwankwaso were merely seeking a convenient platform to secure presidential tickets. “The narrative has been that the APC is responsible for all of the turmoil we have witnessed in the opposition parties. Are we now suggesting that these events that played out in the last 48 hours were also engineered by the APC?
“Maybe someone would actually do that with a bold face to say that maybe the APC did something to cause Peter Obi and Kwankwaso to abandon the ADC into their new party. “These fellows are very unserious and I don’t know how anyone takes them that seriously. These are opposition figures who ought to be concerned about enacting a blueprint for an alternative vision of governance in this country. What are they doing? “They are busy just running from pillar to post, looking for a cheap, inexpensive, maybe even free platform to offer them the presidential ticket on a platter of gold. These are individuals who have demonstrated almost as though it is engrained in their DNA to never remain to solve problems,” Morka showed.
Based on him, Obi had previously criticised politicians who switch parties for convenience but has now become an example of what he described as “nomadic movement. ” He accused the former Anambra State governor of abandoning political parties whenever crises arise, arguing that such behaviour is not ideal for a presidential aspirant.
Morka maintained that the APC has not caused instability within opposition parties, insisting they are responsible for their own internal problems. the ruling party did not need to interfere in the ADC, which he described as a “self-prepared grenade” set to implode due to internal ambitions among its members.
The APC chieftain also insisted that Nigeria is performing better under the APC-led government than many opposition figures had projected. Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, received their NDC membership cards on Sunday amid cheers from supporters after a closed-door meeting with party leaders.
They were welcomed into the party by former Bayelsa State Governor and national leader of the NDC, Seriake Dickson. The development comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Why I turned down INEC ambassador appointment – Governor Amuneke
Nigerian skitmaker and satire content creator, Kevin Chinedu, popularly known for his “Governor Amuneke” character in his digital content. why he turned down an offer to serve as a youth ambassador for the Independent National Electoral Commission. In a video shared on his X handle on Monday, Amuneke indicated he was contacted for the role via social media and initially felt a deep sense of pride, describing the recognition as a major milestone in his journey. “Reports came to me that I was going to be appointed as INEC Youth Ambassador. I have never felt as proud of myself when I got that message,” he showed.
The opportunity meant more to him because of his background and the struggles he endured before gaining visibility as a content creator. “This is supposed to be a national honour. I do not know how to feel about it, but it brought me tears of joy when I thought about how far I have come,”. Amuneke indicated he was informed that the role would place him alongside notable figures and would involve engaging young Nigerians on civic responsibilities, including voter registration and participation in elections.
Meanwhile, he indicated his excitement began to fade after he raised concerns about how the role might affect the nature of his content, which is largely built on political satire and criticism of governance. “I asked a simple question. I indicated, ‘Am I going to still be able to criticise INEC if I’m appointed? ’” Amuneke indicated. Based on him, the response he received indicated that while he could continue creating content and even promote civic awareness, he would not be allowed to directly criticise the electoral body. “They told me they have seen the type of content I do. All of that can still go on. As a matter of fact, I can even preach about getting PVCs and all of that. meanwhile, I cannot criticise directly INEC,” he indicated.
The restriction raised serious concerns for him, given that his work is rooted in holding institutions accountable and amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerians. “The moment I heard that, what seemed like congratulations disappeared. I wish it did not come with certain conditions to box my voice,” he showed. Amuneke stressed that accepting such a condition would contradict the core purpose of his platform, which he indicated is driven by real-life experiences and the struggles of citizens across Africa. “My passion is rooted in so many things. First, tears of millions of Africans. Second, messages I get from different parts of Africa about governance.
Thirdly, my background where I came from and what I have seen,” he showed. the pressure to remain silent on certain issues would be worse than the challenges he currently faces as a critic. “The pressure is worse when I am doing nothing. Those voices keep resounding, and that is what drives me,”. The comedian also used the moment to reflect on the responsibility that comes with influence, urging fellow content creators not to compromise their voices for recognition or financial gain. “If you have a platform today and you do not compromise, always remember there are millions of people whose hope is on that voice. That voice is not just yours,” he indicated.
While declining the offer, Amuneke expressed appreciation to those who considered him for the role, describing it as a meaningful recognition of his work. “I want to thank the person who recommended me. I do not take these opportunities for granted. I am open to working with brands and institutions, but not under conditions that restrict my content,” he indicated. The development comes months after Amuneke showed that he had previously rejected financial inducements from political actors who allegedly attempted to influence his satirical content, reinforcing his stance on maintaining independence in his work. Omakwu made the appeal in a video shared on her Instagram page on Sunday, where she was seen kneeling on the pulpit while addressing the minister. “I cannot fight the minister of the FCT. I cannot.
But I go on my knees as a mother in this land that Jabi Lake Recreation Centre should not be given to anybody. “That is where people go for exercise. That is where people sell. That is where people meet and hobnob and get married. “That is where people go to watch games. That is where young people go to. I beg you, Mr Minister, in the name of God, as a mother, to not sell that land to anybody,” she indicated.
She also cited concerns over past developments in Abuja, recalling how public access to Aso Rock was restricted over time. Omakwu called on the minister to preserve the Jabi Lake area as a public space for residents. “I can’t fight you. But I can beg you in the name of God Almighty that that land be left for everybody. I beg you. Please heed our call,” she indicated.
Despite her appeal, she praised the minister for ongoing infrastructure development in the Federal Capital Territory. She showed, “I want to thank you for all the highways you have built around the city. I thank you. You have made my journey to my home a whole lot easier. Thank you for the other things you are doing. But for this piece of land, I beg you, let it go.

In February, the FCTA, under Wike, entered into a development partnership with Suburban Broadband Limited and Akida Hills Limited to upgrade the facility and boost tourism in Abuja. The minister had showed the initiative was aimed at repositioning the nation’s capital as a destination for leisure and economic activities.
