@jbhuang0604 Couldn’t agree more. Sending students out for research internships is also good for them. I did my first in my 4th year, and that experience contributed so much to my growth. Wish I had started as early as my second year.

When I was a grad student, sometimes I felt isolated because there wasn't much collaboration among students and opportunities to work with different mentors. So, three students from my lab will be visiting Berkeley, Stanford, and Cornell next Spring! We will miss having them around, but I am sure that the experiences will help them grow as better researchers! Also, thanks to our friends for hosting them!

In late 2022, I joined a small team of researchers to explore content-aware text effects. This led to an incredible journey that moved us from research prototyping to launching a feature in 2023. I've written a brief post reflecting on this technology and what's next.

This actually happened to Evernote. They took the advice of “keep talking to your customers and ship whatever they want” as the only guiding principle for product development. And what ended up happening was paying users liked it, but the product become unintuitive and feature overload for the new user. To the extent that they had to rebuild a version for the new user. Users don’t always know if they really want something. It’s your job to take the extra step to think on their behalf: whether they really need this. Or can what they ask be done through something much simpler. Or can you solve multiple problems of different users with one new redesign rather than a bunch of changes. The right principle is: “Keep talking and listening to your users, spend the additional time thinking on their behalf what they actually want, and ship that”.
