Yoshiaki Fujiwara recently spoke about his first-hand experiences of the famous fight between Antonio Inoki and Muhammad Ali: Fujiwara served as Inoki's sparring partner in the build-up, living alongside him through every twist and turn of the preparation period. What he witnessed was a man under extraordinary psychological pressure. The Ali camp were masters of information warfare - leaking stories about Ali's incredible conditioning one day, his struggles the next - and Inoki rode every wave. "Some days he was impatient; other days he was depressed," Fujiwara told web Sportiva. "I think the Ali camp had experts at leaking information to control the opponent. I think Inoki-san fell for it." The small moments told the biggest story. A Saint Bernard wandering into the dojo sent Inoki into a rage over nothing. A single glass of ice-cold beer, smuggled to him after practice by Fujiwara despite his alcohol ban, was downed in one go with a quiet "thank you" - a moment Fujiwara remembers as a window into just how much Inoki's heart was fluctuating. Then came the words he says he will never forget. "Inoki-san whispered to me, 'Can I win?' as if he were talking to himself. I replied immediately without a second of hesitation, 'You can win!' Then Inoki-san grinned and said, 'I can win, right? I'm in good shape.'" The match itself - fifteen rounds under ring lights exceeding 40°C, against a man Fujiwara describes as closer to a god than an athlete - produced the famous Ali Kick strategy. Inoki spent the entire fight on the mat, kicking from the ground. The tactic had never once been practised in their sessions together. "I think Inoki-san used that kick after thinking it through over and over," Fujiwara said. "You can't do that for 15 rounds if your condition isn't perfect." The draw verdict left Inoki alone in the locker room in tears. Fujiwara saw it, said nothing, and quietly left. "Only Inoki-san knows that frustration." The media called it the Farce of the Century. Fujiwara's response was blunt. "The ones who criticized it are guys who don't know what a fight is. That match was the last real fight of the Showa era." His final assessment of the man who fought Ali carries a warmth that makes it land harder than any insult could. "It might sound bad to say this, but honestly, I think Inoki-san was a fool. Because he didn't have to fight someone like Ali. Jumping into that is a sensation someone like me can't understand. The man was a gambler. The Ali match was the peak of that. If he lost, he lost everything. Yet he did it." The friendship that blossomed between Ali and Inoki after the fight - culminating in Ali entering the Tokyo Dome in 1998, battling Parkinson's, to shake Inoki's hand in front of around 70,000 people - was the final word on what that night really meant. "I think that for both of them, that fight was probably the scariest match of their lives. Having survived it, I think a feeling of 'thank you' sprouted between them.
