Antisemitism has been a problem in Ireland. I grew up around Irish Catholics who were rabidly antisemitic, some members of my family. But, Ireland is a complex modern European state, please don’t judge the whole country on the basis of a TV interview. Millions of Irish people have emigrated all over the world, and millions have returned. Those cultural experiences, some of which were limited for people who couldn’t leave, plus the Catholic Church (the Jews crucified Jesus) and very limited every day experience of meeting Jews, obviously affected a lot of people’s ideas and ugly tropes about Jewish people weren’t questioned. The political and colonial history of Ireland, has encouraged some people on the left to see common cause with the Palestinians, but it’s by no means a view held by every Irish person. Irish people have recent, bitter heartbreaking memories of occupation and guerrilla warfare. This is a complex issue, but I would ask you to hold some grace for people in the audience. Boy George is not a universally admired man, he was convicted of kidnapping, chaining and beating a sex worker for days. I certainly don’t feel most people want to hear much from him, although his defense of people he has lived around was noble. But, isn’t it the same for all of us? We are all challenged in our assumptions about groups we think we know about when we actually experience them. People are people, the world over. Every community has good and bad in it, in my experience more good than bad. Living in America I know Jews and Muslims, as friends and coworkers and the majority of them are lovely people. It’s extremism we have to focus on, and that violence and hatred can erupt in any group towards any other group. Like most people in this world, the Irish are lovely people, I hope you’ll cherish your citizenship and enjoy visiting Ireland again.
