@whstancil IMO it’s clear there is no clear distinction in theory. I agree with many others that the current gap is in abstraction. GPT can't have integrity because it doesn’t have a way to know what a fact is, much less weigh evidence, estimate certainty, or have a desire to tell truth

I’d obviously like to believe there’s some kind of unbridgeable bright-line conceptual gap between myself and a calculator, but man, it’s tough to figure out what exactly that distinction is. and when the calculator starts talking like a person, things get real existential fast

the thing that bothers me is that people say "the AIs can't think, they're just a complicated algorithm designed to predict how to best respond to a prompt" but, isn't that kind of what my brain is doing too

@engineering_bae Espanolistas is a fun podcast aimed at ~intermediate speakers. American SSL host’s total lack of attempt at an accent is a bummer. But otherwise great!

@engineering_bae Pimsleur, hands down. Plus it’s primarily audio call and response with more listening over time, so you can do it while driving or doing chores or whatever.

I want to brush up on my Spanish and have been using Duolingo to do so. However, idk if that’s the best route. If you’ve successfully brushed up on a language using an app, which one did you use?

@austin_rief This seems not so controversial? Paying monthly subscriptions of the same order of magnitude as major streaming services for, say, an individual writer’s output was obviously never going to be anything but a path to independence for a few all stars 🤷‍♂️
