Scott (@scottmcnealy) is right and we did it that way when I worked at Scott’s Sun Microsystems 30+ years ago. Compensation should reflect one’s contribution to the company. An “Individual Contributor,” who is a brilliant technologist/architect, might be a huge contributor. Perhaps more than their manager, who may be very good nonetheless. I worked at Sun from 1987 to 1994. I was a software developer and then in management of major software groups. (I was the “Product Boss” for the first Solaris OS at Sun.) I can vouch first-hand that this is exactly what we did at Sun, even back then. I can remember specific meetings on reviews and salaries (e.g., in the 1990-92 period) and exact names of superb “individual contributor” engineers. We handled things that way, just as Scott stated. Some individuals got – and deserved – more than their manager.

Sales reps could make more than their bosses. Same with distinguished engineers. Why would you want Bill Joy or Andy Bechtolsheim managing when they could be inventing? You should not be rewarded just because you have lots of folks working for you.

@TheCatholicEngr That is why many companies in the Bay Area allow for many of us to become managers and directors and VPs in rank and comp, but not to actually have any direct reports. I believe we actually owe @scottmcnealy A thank you for that practice But he may be able to correct me

The History of the CIF Southern Section documentary will air on Spectrum SportsNet this Saturday, December 13th, at 7:00PM. The documentary covers so many incredible milestones dating back to 1913. Most importantly, it’s a special tribute to our late historian, Dr. John Dahlem🤍
