The WHO has declared a global health emergency. A strain of Ebola with no approved vaccine is spreading in eastern Congo — where 8 million displaced people have little access to healthcare. Two thirds of Virunga National Park and most of our staff are inside the affected area.⁠ In 2018, our screening stations checked up to 4,000 travellers a day and helped stop the disease reaching major cities. This Endangered Species Day, we're launching a new pilot at Virunga National Park. Vultures are among the most threatened bird species in Africa. They are also, we believe, an underutilised tool in conservation. Five vultures will be fitted with lightweight GPS devices. Over 12 months, our teams will monitor their movement patterns and assess whether behavioural signals — unusual clustering, prolonged inactivity, sudden displacement — can support earlier detection of threats and more targeted Ranger deployment across the Park. Monitoring a landscape of this scale remains one of the core challenges in conservation. Le Parc National des Virunga est heureux d’annoncer que, vendredi dernier, lors d’un suivi de routine, les pisteurs communautaires ont observé un nouveau-né au sein de la famille Bageni.⁠ ⁠ Âgée de 9 ans, la femelle subadulte Katuku a donné naissance à son premier petit, un mâle. Cette naissance est la deuxième enregistrée au sein de cette famille cette année, après celle de jumeaux en janvier. Virunga National Park is pleased to announce that, last Friday, during a monitoring patrol, community trackers observed a newborn in the Bageni family.⁠ ⁠ Katuku, a 9-year-old subadult female, gave birth to her first infant, a male. The birth is the second recorded in this family this year, following the birth of twins in January. Vendredi dernier, les équipes de suivi du Parc National des Virunga et les pisteurs communautaires, accompagnés du Dr Fabrice de Gorilla Doctors, ont effectué un suivi sanitaire de routine de la famille Wilungula. Les trente-six membres observés étaient en bon état de santé. Cette famille tire son nom de son dos argenté, Wilungula, le seul membre du groupe à avoir été nommé individuellement. Elle fait partie des 11 familles de gorilles présentes dans le Parc et, avec la famille Baraka, des deux groupes encore en cours d’habituation. Last Friday, Virunga's monitoring teams and trackers, with Dr Fabrice of Gorilla Doctors, conducted a routine health check of the Wilungula troop. Le lac Édouard, l'un des grands lacs d'Afrique, constitue le cœur aquatique du Parc National des Virunga et une source vitale pour les communautés vivant le long de ses rives.⁠ ⁠ Sur sa rive est, la pêcherie de Ndeze à Nyakakoma — l’une des cinq pêcheries réglementées du Parc — réunit conservation et communautés locales. Les écogardes assurent la sécurité du lac et protègent les zones interdites. Lake Edward, one of Africa's Great Lakes, forms the aquatic heart of Virunga National Park and is a vital source of life for communities living along its shores.⁠ ⁠ On its eastern shore, the Ndeze fishery in Nyakakoma — one of the Park's five regulated fisheries — is where conservation and local communities come together. During the latest hippopotamus census, the southern shore of Lake Edward emerged as the primary stronghold, home to the majority of the population, estimated at over 2,700 individuals.
